Anyone going to Partizan?
« on: May 16, 2017, 05:52:56 PM »
I'm relatively new to the whole wargame show thing. I was originally in the Games Workshop sphere of the hobby as a teenager (as I'm sure many of you know, that meant not being aware of anything wargaming beyond GW!), and roughly 10 years later came back to it from a historical perspective with a general distaste for anything GW. So the concept of a wargame show is something quite new to me.

Last year I went to Salute and Partizan by myself and enjoyed both days. Having only recently returned to the hobby added alot to the excitement though, and I bought all sorts of things to build up my new terrain collection and the like....
This year, I'm aware that I probably won't be buying much, haven gotten over my initial spending splurge. There is also the danger that I'll just walk around, admire the tables, then have nothing to do. For that reason I passed on Salute, not really being too keen on driving down to London, but Partizan seems more appealing as a day out and a pleasant drive from Norfolk.

Anyone else going to be there? Anything good late-medieval to look out for this year? (that is where most of my interests lie)

I guess I should make sure to play a game or two and socialise a bit.. Last year I played my first game of Lion Rampant, which was fun.

Not Late Medieval, but The Lincoln Miniature Wargames Sociery are doing the Battle of Lincoln - it's the 800th anniversary this year.  There's also a re-enactment day at the castle this weekend, on Saturday.

Couple of hints:

Don't be shy to talk to the demo gamers, or take part in participation game.  They're a keen bunch, and you may find yourself talking to a boyhood hero!  The likes of Rick Priestley,  the Perry twins, the ex-GW Warlord bunch may be there.

Have a look at the traders and plan out some purchases, then take a fixed amount of cash and only spend that (allowing some for impulse buys).  It's tougher in these days of chip and pin machines that run off an iPad, but you can do it!

There are a couple of good terrain stalls there - The Last Valley makes and sells beautiful handmade pieces, and you may find some resin or MDF sellers.  Warbases sell MDF buidings, and the likes of Fenris do some lovely stuff, from scatter pieces up to entire building kits.

Think I'm going - I had planned a single mini purchase which wasn't worth the petrol, but now I see Fenris and a couple of other favourites there...

It's only really just up the road for me so I'll be going.  Only discovered wargames shows last year (another lapsed GWer!) and this should be my first show without kids in tow. That means I can hopefully try some demo games.

In theory I already spent this month's budget but...

Foundry moved out of Nottingham to East Stoke (on the way to Newark from Nottingham) and are well worth a visit.  They run Oldhammer events, and you can book their tables for a day's gaming and discounted models.  Cost is £10 per person but you get an amazing pile of food!

Drop your better half off at the Eden Hall spa on the other side of the village for the day...

If you play at any of the Norwich clubs are any of them going? I know several people from the New Buckenham club from South Norfolk are travelling up as a group.

James Morris and I will be there (under the Lenton Gamers badge) - it says Demo Game on the page but there's a demo game AND a participation game. Both based on the battle of Oppy Wood in May 1917.
So please do drop by and say hello and roll some dice.

I keep thinking about organising a Lion/Dragon Rampant day at Foundry - a bunch of us from Lincoln have had a couple of "pre-stag" events there with great success.

It's a good game for such things - the rules are very cheap, and can be taught quickly.  A DR army can be really small and have any theme you like.

Still not got off my backside to do it though  ::)

Will keep my eye out for you then!
