Warehouse Shanty Town - very WIP
« on: May 25, 2017, 10:41:15 AM »
I've been lurking around here for quite a while and I figured it was time I shared something I'm working on. As I said this is all very WIP!

I had this idea to put a shanty town inside a warehouse as a post-apocalyptic settlement which I thought would look cool.

I'm also finding it ridiculously fiddly, time consuming and a bit of a pain to get working...but I expected all of that. I thought it was a cool idea not necessarily a clever idea!  ;)

The whole thing is set up in a TTCombat warehouse plus extension mdf building.

The framework for the ground floor shanties are made with a combination of plastic rod and square wooden dowel.

I've added a wooden platform from dowels and coffee stirrers to the end of the raised area that came with the warehouse kit. This has a burger van that came from (I think) Ainstey Castings on the top. I'm fencing off the areas underneath as animal pens. And added portable toilets from TTC combat because, hey, every settlement really needs toilets!

Here it is, as it stands

The roofs will stay removable and I'm also going to build a slightly smaller layer of shanties on top of these. I'm also planning on adding details to the inside of all of the shanties.

Nothing is glued in place yet, which is good because I might need to rethink some parts of it. I'm not 100% sure how playable it is, some of the areas look a bit tight to move miniatures through...  :?

I'm also trying to think of a name that's a bit shorter than "the warehouse shanty town thing" I've been calling it so far.  lol
I'm leaning towards painting a "9" on the door and calling it "9town" at the minute but that might change.

Thanks for reading! :) Any comments, feedback or advice?

Sadly I think you might need to repost the images. I can I see them.

Sorry about that, I've edited the original post and hopefully the images should be visible now!  :-I

Love the concept and the work so far looks great. Can't wait to see how this turns out.

It's not big, or clever, but let's do it anyway

That looks like a great start, well done. Not sure how playable it will end up being, but from a pure modelling and imagination point of view, it's fantastic. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress on it. :)

That looks like a nightmare to put together, in the fiddly sense (my clumsy fingers would make a mess of things for sure). But the idea and execution so far look amazing! Looking forward to following this.  :D

Thanks for the kind comments all! :)

Not sure how playable it will end up being
That is my main worry at the minute, some of the ground level parts are really difficult to get hands into. I need to add in at least one bridge and I think I can use that to close off the worst areas which will oddly make it more playable. But I'm still not sure.  :?

Worst case, it's just going to be a really elaborate display for any PA warbands I have  lol

Excellent, how big is the warehouse building?
It's 17 by 10 inches.

That looks like a nightmare to put together, in the fiddly sense (my clumsy fingers would make a mess of things for sure).
I have spent a lot of time swearing and trying to unstick myself from various parts of this lol

And now some more pictures! I've semi-finished the second layer of shanties:

And an overhead shot to show the final layout

Basically that's all of the structures built - I'm not sure about putting (removable) roofs on the second level. This is all indoors so they shouldn't need them but they just look a bit wrong without.

On to painting and working out all the internal details next! :)

This is really lovely. I wouldn't worry about playability, even if it's just an internal 'valley' I think it will be excellent scenery. Perhaps some lean-to's on the outside walls, allowing access through the windows would help, or a ruined wall section or two to allow movement through and around.
