Excellent the text says that chinstrap was in black leather because the gendarmes wanted to abide by regulations as much as possible, even when wearing this.

That's for Indochina (Vietnam if you prefer) at the same period. I'm not sure that this headgear was worn by french troops in China. It seemed that they were happy with the british airpipe helmet.
