Some shots from last turn and this turn (turn 4) of the play by mail game coming to an end right now ...

The game is necessarily slow, while I wait for players to answer, give orders, even just tell me the dispel dice they are using against each enemy spell. We have been playing several days now (I forget exactly when we started.) But the delays give me a chance to edit the pics, and put blue card behind to turn the room into the sky!!!

There are a  LOT of photos made only for the players' orientation and information, like this one  ...

Herewith a quick game of Ancients using To The Strongest rules, see: https://bigredbatshop.co.uk/collections/all/wargames-rules

What I particularly like about these rules, especially as they have no measuring, no dice, and are quick to play. All using standard card decks. One will notice this battlefield has no squares demarcated as one sees in many games using these rules - they really are not necessary. In the end it was a Roman victory - beaten by my 6 year old son, again... The Germans had some activation problems and the commander landed up being largely indecisive. As casualties mounted command broke down entirely especially as the Romans started to outflank the barbarians. The idea was that the Germans had decided to attack before the Romans built their wall hence only the watch tower. Indeed, the entire point of the game was just to use the new watchtower. This is a paper model I found online. Miniatures are mostly Esci, Revell and Airfix with some old Atlantic miniatures.

Looks very nice!  But Proper?  Hmm, i don't recall square bases being invented yet when I played 1st Edition, I think those came in with 3rd Edition era plastics...

Slotta tabs came in around 1985 I believe so 2nd edition.  They certainly pre-date 3rd edition and the first plastics figures.

So what shape bases did you use for your First Edition ganes?
Mine all had right angle corners when I played Ziggurat of Doom and Bloodbath at Orcs Drift.
Cut by hand from mounting board with a Stanley knife and with Tetrion filler (as recommended in WD) to blend the integral metal base in.
Square or rectangular bases was a part of the rules even back then. :D

We also exclusively used square and rectangular bases for first ed. Cut cardboard, glue base to it, then milluput around. Paint, then scatter on flock while the enamel paint was wet

I recall round slotta bases, but could be wrong.  If I excavate the old game box, there might be photos in the book.  When the first boxes of plastic skellies and others came along, they were square then.

Plastic slottas arrived after first edition - at some point during second. There were some hexagonal ones (for Talisman and LotR models) fantasy all came with square or rectangular. First round ones I recall were for some Eldar I bought around the time Rogue Trader came out.

Before that you had to make your own fun (and bases) :)

After a three and a half decade hiatus played a game of Epic 40K.  My Dark Angels got rolled by the Eldar.
