What Power Level For 40K 8th Ed. Games?
« on: July 03, 2017, 05:11:51 AM »
Basically what the topic label says… what Power Level are all y’all playing the new WH40K at? I am interested in trying the new rules and I can field 50PL for a few forces from stuff I still have kicking around. But how small can the games go before it starts breaking down? You know, just to get a fell for the new rules?

Thank you!

50P is about 1,000pts, 75=1,500pts, 100=2,000pts.

So I'd say 40 Power is probably about the minimum you'd want judging by previous editions.

Had a few games at 50 power so far and  they played out well, looking at playing 100+ next.
IMHO I think 50p is about right for a small game that you can play to a conclusion in a couple of hours.
Will try playing a smaller 25/30p game this week to see how it goes.

Have you looked at  Shadow war armageddon? as that requires only a small amount of miniatures.

Played my first game at 50PL and it was the equivalent to 1000 points in 7E. If both my opponent and myself had been more familiar with our individual forces profiles the game would have wrapped up in 90 minutes.

It played nice and smooth, the basics of 40K are still there, the roll to hit, roll to wound, roll to save core mechanic still drives the game. Looking forward to getting more games in soon.

Agreed, I think they've got something good there, unlike the Age of Sigmar launch debacle.  The tweak to the Strength vs Toughness mechanic was the standout change to me, along with vehicles finally going back to having a Wounds stat like everything else.  Nice to see save modifiers back as well, I never liked the all-or-nothing AP value thing (ie 40K has annoyed me for five whole editions now).

I'm looking forward to this edition (will be a while before my copy arrives).
It feels like we finally have a balance point.
40K has for to long been swinging from one meta to the other, where one part of my army or entire army was invalidated.

I do think this will be the point where the game will remain for me though. With the new rulebook and the indexes I'll have a balanved point to play with all the models I have and some I will want in the future.
I don't think I'll be adding codexes and such when they come out.

I've played two games, one at 70(?) and one at around 75 points.  Both were do-able within 2-3 hours (with a lot of idle chit chat, rules checking, etc.).  I'd play a larger game but it'd have to have some good terrain and a decent scenario (friggin' can't stand the obsession with "scoot around this board and pick up tokens...").

We just had a game last night with around 85 Power Levels each and it went by just fine. I'd say that 100 Power Levels is the better choice tho' as you have the opportunity to field more troops, thus giving you more stuff to do during the game.
