LVR-Archaeological Park & Roman Museum, Xanten, Pt. 2
« on: October 01, 2017, 01:37:59 PM »
The first post on this visit focused on the military artefacts seen in the Roman Museum.

In the second part I have covered the really interesting reconstructions and investigative work carried out at the park to reveal more about the Romans in Colonia Ulpia Traiana, plus a very famous item that is the only certain archaeological evidence of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest.

Thanks for posting this.  Next year we will be visiting my sister-in-law who lives in Lochem - just across the border.  This might have to be on the to-do list.

A fantastic place to visit indeed, been there twice myself now - the museum wasn't there the first time, but it alone is worthwhile - as you wrote, even just for the artillery piece! The reconstructed buildings in the park really help appreciate the architecture and aesthetics of the place. Was tempted to recreate it in 28mm when first I was there, and these pictures don't help!

Thanks for your comments chaps.

The Roman collection and historical park make this a must see venue if you are in the area and get the chance as you can really immerse yourself in the subject in place like Xanten.

Cheers

Did you see any books or plans of the various watercraft for sale?

I can't say I did which is why I took pictures of all the info boards they had plastered up all around the boat yard. Nearly all the books on sale were catering for German speakers so perhaps there was more information but not that I could understand.
