1/100 King Tiger
« on: July 27, 2017, 02:10:58 PM »
Okay,

let's do something unusual... instead of 'punditing' showing a newly painted (of done in May straight after Partizan, but forgot to post...) tank. Ladies and Gentlemen, be in awe of the might Zvezda 15mm King Tiger...

Okay not just in bare plastic... but after Dr. Arrigo Velicogna, world renowned military historian (or at least word annoying military historian), has applied his not indifferent painting skills to it (2 years of working in academia are taking their toll...)

It was a really fun kit to pull together and also to paint. I really enjoyed it. So much I now have 4, and for 12£ in total. They will join my two BF one (one with the pre-production turret, one with the series turret).  Zvezda is getting better and better. If they just to a Jagdpanzer IV..

Well it is not the only new thing on my blog so have a look...

That does look nice (both in the plastic and painted).

considering I had to pay the princely sum of three quids for it... it is more than nice!  lol

Seriously it is incredible how much model making technology has progressed. When I started doing WW2 15mm the only offer was the Skytrex/Old Glory Range...

Nice paint job. I recently built one and it is a particularly nice kit to work with plenty of detail on the body.

Beautiful work.  However, the staves on the side of the tank are for the bore brush for cleaning the main armament, they aren't stadia for setting up indirect fire.  Tanks did set up defensive positions with range cards to be able to fire on fixed lines in low visibility/night time but the zero azimuth stake was most usually a piece of a long straight tree branch for each position.

Nice brushwork, although I'm not a fan of the rusted tracks trope. Looks like a cute little kit.

The Germans painted their tracks with red oxide primer, so it's appropriate for the model.

Nice piece.

Red oxide primer that never abraded, even in contact with metal?

True, the paint on the contact points with the ground would wear off:

The Bovvy Tiger - painted to original finish & a runner...

Well,

the basic idea is to have reddish brown for the primer, the drybrush of gunmetal, then flat earth for the mud and dust... for some reasons (actually the main reason is that the track are under-detailed compared to BF or PSC the drybrush did not work as intended, especially on the 'internal' part, where the plastic is flat... again 3£... and the pictures are bigger than the real model! No one will notice on the table (or so I say...  lol ). It is 'weakest' point of Zvezda tanks little details on the tracks.

Stadia stakes... I was undecided. I did not relish painting them, but some google fu turned some pictures of them... I think they gave a bit of color variation. Funny thing, this morning I shown the real beast to a friend who has no knowledge of tanks but she asked if having stadia marks has any sense on a battlefield... anyway now I have an excuse to paint them metal or wood.
