Some additional info on the lead up to the battle: the Ottomans (led by a reluctant civilian administrator pushed into command) were making an anemic attempt to raise the siege of Kars, the major Turkish fortress in the Caucasus. The withdrawal of a wagon train fooled the Russians into thinking the Turks were retreating. The Russians advanced, the Turks tried to jump them and this battle resulted.
