Pacific Beach Assault (IABSM)
« on: August 02, 2017, 08:55:21 AM »
Here's an after action report from the game of I Ain't Been Shot, Mum! that I played this weekend just gone.

It's the Pacific Theatre, 1945, with a company of US Marines, along with supporting Amtracks, tasked with assaulting a Japanese-held beach on a small island in the middle of nowhere...

Love the battle.
Interesting that you continued to play the battle after a couple of players left.
What an outcome, quite different from the turn before.

I don't think the US players realised how close they were to winning. It was a long, hard slog for them up the beaches and, at that stage, all they could see was a couple of holes in the barbed wire.

Once I'd taken over, the Japanese got hit by more naval artillery, which made it relatively easy for me to walk into their position...but you are right: interesting how 'battle fatigue' made the original US players doubt themselves.

I'm not familiar with the rules, did you need the Japan supplement to play, or does the base rule set cover enough for landing assaults?

It wouldn't have been absolutely necessary, but having the Rising Sun supplement certainly helped.

A great looking game! I've experienced the same thing a few times with IABSM, when you look at the situation and say "The attack's not going anywhere, shall we call it a draw?", then play one more turn and the defence goes pear-shaped.

That's the thing about defence, isn't it. It tends to look strong, but once a crack opens up and it exploited the whole thing collapses completely.

edit: @cdm: I think I should point out that the Rising Sun supplement for IABSM costs GBP 5.00, so it's very affordable. :)
