Historicon; Egypt vs Assyria with To the Strongest!
« on: August 01, 2017, 11:15:20 AM »
I ran this huge game Sat night with 14 players, and we all had a blast with the game:

More picture, write up, and some thoughts on the Tp the Strongest! rules on my blog at:

Looking terrific! Reminds me of the Cecil B Demille movies I saw as a kid.  :-)

PS I suspect 14 players on a single game is a record. I've run bigger games but never more players!

Thanks, guys, glad you liked it!

Napoleonics is my first love in our hobby, so the megalomania comes naturally. :-)

To the Strongest *easily* handled 7 players a side, all but one of which on each side had just one command.

The biggest game that I have ever run was the Battle of Wagram at Historicon 2009, also with 14 players. That game (played with Field of Battle rules) was a blast as well!

Very nice looking game . Exactly what To The Strongest is about ! We,ve played a lot of TTS and really enjoy it . We played an Italian wars game at the beginning of the game with about 120 units a side on a 24x 6 table . Finished in 4 hours . Great fun !

I have been thinking about Napoleonics; I have a pretty substantial French army and am planning some Russian opponents. I think the system would translate pretty well... It's one possibility for after the ECW version.

There is certainly no reason that the TTS engine couldn't work for Napoleonics/Horse and Musket era.

The one thing about Napoleonics is that, IMHO, formations matter in a way that isn't nearly as true earlier (Marlborough, 7 years war) or later (ACW and beyond). For high level games where a unit = a Brigade or more, that is probably less true.

The Renaissance (through mid to  late 1500's) would seem an obvious extension. On the other hand, the changes needed might be so small that they might simply be included in TTS version 2 (plus of course, the requisite army lists - surely the bane of rules authors, especially pre 1700!)

Hi Peter,

Re Renaissance, I think the required changes can be accommodated in the ancient set.

Yes I agree the formations do matter for Naps- the most problematic being line.  I think it would need an edition of its own but I will try to keep the rules of the different versions as close as I can- the "Even Stronger" ancient supplement has a lot of the ECW rules in it, for example, which will be in an eventual TtS v2.

I have also toyed with 45 degree facings for Naps and WSS... there are a lot of angles in those periods, when one looks at battle plans, and I think they could work.

Best, Simon
