Ships of the Sengoku period (feudal Japan)
« on: August 03, 2017, 05:49:15 AM »
Interested in Samurai boats? Then this might be of interest for you  :)

A friend of mine pointed me to a book in the Osprey series and after reading it I thought I give it a try making some boats. I wanted to make a kind of modular paper model set with 3 sizes of boats, that should allow to build the typical boats useable for gaming. Making it paper model will make it very affordable and let you build any size fleet quite fast.

The small boats would represent small vessel, like fishing boats or traveling from land to boat or boat to boat.

The medium boats could be used as kobaya for example. Fast lean and versatile ships for scouting and moving troops efficiently.

The big boats could be used as sekibune (pointed bow) and atakebune (blunt bow). They would represent the big boat(s) of your fleet.

As usual my work process involves making 3D prototypes first.

I then started working on white prototypes. It took a while until I got the shape right.

Each of the sizes comes in the two versions: pointed and blunt bow.

Detachable super structures will turn the boat into what it is in the end. Here the kobaya style boat is upgraded with small shield walls.

The large sekibune hull is fitted with the "house" block.

This show the sizes relative to each other ...

Next I work on the texturing to make it all come to life!

Thanks Vagabond!

Today I want to show you how the medium kobaya boats turned out with textures.

The blunt bow hull version without and with "dirt" texture layer. I find the weathering effect makes them look used and weather beaten. On the inside hull wall I have originally made frames (clean version) but was told that the Japanese did not build boats that way. That is why I then adapted the texture to the historically correct version on the weathered boat. I have left the original version too as alternate option  :)

And then the pointed bow hull version. I have also added the transversal beam in the bow section. Not sure what it is, but I am guessing it is for anchoring or towing the boat...

Optionally you can add this super structure. It is a kind of shield wall for the men in the boat to hide behind. Imagine Samurai archers getting ready for attack!

So this is what the assembled versions look like.

This is the easy version. Much faster to build and great for placing minis!

The full cutout framework version takes a little more time to build but looks really great.

I even weathered the waterline! Water, algae and clams have their effect during the years  :)

Hope you've enjoyed it this far. Going to work on the big boats now.

Thanks Scurv! They will be available on http://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse/pub/9531/Papierschnitzel but it will take a little while more. Need to tackle the big boats and then instructions etc. I expect it to be release ready end of this month.

These are excellent, really nice work.  :)  Not a paper model guy, but they'll make for some nice templates/guides should I decide to scratchbuild some.

These are excellent, really nice work.  :)  Not a paper model guy, but they'll make for some nice templates/guides should I decide to scratchbuild some.

The outlines are vector format so you can scale them to any scale you want! Even print them at A3 or larger paper format  :)

For the big boats I wanted to adapt according to feedback I got for the stern section. It required a little geometry change and redo of the unfold but here is a first look at the white test build of an atakebune! (Also the small boats done  :))

Should be enough space for lots of Samurai on deck  :D

Now on to texturing that big baby!

Really nice! I always love boats in games, even if it's just as set dressing.
never trust a horse, they make a commitment to shoes that no animal should make.

WIP pics for the first textured big boat: the Atakebune version  :)

And here with a little fleet ...

Next up is the dirt/weathering layers and the pointed bow Sekibune version!

Thank you Randy.

I have completed the weathered build of the super structure ... and added a variation to the little house (esp for the sekibune version).

The deck thingies are removeable, for safe storage. I just put them into the super structure box  :D

This project is almost done. Need to build a weathered hull and then start the final checks and make instructions.

You are welcome!

With the medium boats I just glued the flags in place. But for storage it would be better if I could remove the flags. So for the big boats I took the time to create flag holders that I could insert and remove the flags.

So now the Atakebune looks like this

Now I am able to switch clans  as desired :D
