ACW - Monitor passes Earth Fort
« on: 14 August 2017, 04:36:01 PM »
I have taken some pictures of a Conferderate Monitor passing by a Union-Earth Fort. O.k., the fort is not really ACW-style but it's the only one I have...
Hope you nevertheless enjoy the pictures. Some more pictures can be found at: https://www.facebook.com/dingstownstory/photos/pcb.851052221720043/851047565053842/?type=3&theater

I didn't know they had any monitors. Won't you give us a few details, pretty please?

The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

I didn't re-build any historical scenario and did not check which type of ships the Confederation has had. Let's assume they have captured one from the Union.

There was only one Monitor, and it was a ship of the Union. The Confederates had another ironclad ship, the CSS Virginia, which looked less steampunky. You can read up on the battle between the two ships and their fate on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Monitor.

Though, to make your picture more historically accurate, you could simply change the legend to Union troops waving past the Monitor from their fort. They don't seem to be shooting at it anyway  :).

It IS true that the Union decided on the monitor "style" of ironclad as the Confederate forces decided on the "casemate" style....there was only one USS Monitor is also true, and the CSS Virginia (formerly the USS Merrimack...a captured Union frigate converted into the ironclad)...but both sides had many different ironclads to fight with, monitor style AND casemate style. The Union ALSO used a "casemate" style in their riverboat ironclads and "tinclads"...which had NO metal armor, but rather a heavy wooden bulwark for protection...."Google" is a good friend in this case.
I only bring this up, as I learned a lot when I did research for the scratch built ironclads I built, and have shown on this site....the fast pace of the conversions for war were incredible!!

Besides, in OUR world of gaming, ANYTHING is possible AND plausible!

Anyway...my 2 cents
Cheers,
Carl
