Since starting late, Late Antigonid Macedonians are very appropriate.
I had tried before to start ancients, but after a start, I lost interest. Usually it’s because I did them without all the necessary stuff, just getting by in order to have an army on the table-top. Painting was good but could be better, colours schemes not thought upon and no effort whatsoever to take proper pictures. Delving into the labyrinth of my conscience, I decided that if I want to do something I either do it properly or do something else.
The opportunity to participate in this is great because doing this challenge with others would motivate me more.
InspirationWell, the cover illustration by Peter Dennis of Osprey’s Macedonian Armies after Alexander
https://ospreypublishing.com/macedonian-armies-after-alexander-323-168-bc sparked my imagination. Horsemen advancing out of the mist in an arid landscape. Got immediately hooked.
Model rangePlastic kits are always the best for me and Victrix have the best plastic ancients range. Besides I have extra helmets and such like in order to do simple conversions.
BasesPreviously I used to use plastic bases, multi-bases for everything except skirmishers. Warlord plastic bases however have only 4 single bases per sprue, Victrix bases I really don’t like due to round corners. I tried Sarissa Precision because I also wanted to have movement trays – totally satisfied with their products, and postage of £2.50 is reasonably cheap. I opted for single bases even for rank-and-file units so I can use them for many games systems like OGAM (Vanvlak’s fault!), with round 60mm bases for commanders.
LightOne of the few things Mrs Corso and myself agree upon is having warm-white (yellowish hue) lights at our flat. However, I had noticed that my minis don’t look good outside and in other people’s home/club, so to address the discrepancy I bought a work-lamp with a day-light bulb. I’ll get used to it.
PaintsI have been using the latest range of GW paints since their launch 5 years ago. With the exception of washes, which are the best in the market, the normal paints have been a disappointment and money-waste. They dry quickly in their pots. For example in the last 5 years I have bought 4 pots of Cadian Fleshtone, always with half the point drying. (I did clean the lid rim so that it can close properly). In the meantime I still have the old GW paint Dwarf Flesh, bought 6 years ago and still not dry!! So a new paint range was needed.
I ordered Foundry Paints, and after weeks am still waiting for them………..so in the meantime assembling and doing shields using LBMS transfers.
Since I started quite late, I'll do 3 units by October 1st
