El Cid Muslim Cavalry and pictures of a border Castle
« on: August 29, 2017, 01:33:12 PM »
Just completed on of my first units of troops for my El Cid project for a long time. These are my only unit of Muslim heavy cavalry. I took the opportunity to share some pictures of a Christian Border Castle near Seville I went to a couple of weeks ago at the same time. Write up and picture son the blog.

Nice painting & nice pictures, thanks for sharing

If it isn't enjoyable, it isn't gaming!

That is a very handsome unit.  The castle looks really interesting - I would love to visit.

Out of interest, I'm looking at that fellow next to last on the right. Do people generally feel that a little bit of lamellar got bought or manufactured in Al Andalus?

I decided that as they used so many Mercenaries mixing a very small ammount of lamellar or similar wouldnt be an issue. Horse archers as I understand it were the same. Not Native to Spain but mercenaries brought in in small numbers.

My understanding is that by sometime in the 12thC. Turkic military fashions (or, possibly, Persian fashions favoured by the Turks) started to appear in Spain such as the curved sword and possibly lammelar armour.

Roger, in your photo of the castle entrance, would a cavalry man fit through on his mount, or is that purely a pedestrian entrance?

Hi Phil, both entrances to the main ward are pedestrian only. The only gate big enough for a horse is on the outer ward a small walled D at the front of the castle.

There are some tremendous Moorish fortifications in Spain, especially in the south.  Malaga has two (count 'em) separate but linked castles that can be walked about.  Seville has some excellent pieces of city wall extant.  Cordova has both, the city walld and gates being most impressive.  And Granada, of course, has the Alhambra, though there are parts of the city wall down by the river as well.
