Marengo BBB 1800 AAR
« on: August 25, 2017, 05:21:11 PM »
The Fencibles played a first test of my Marengo scenario last night. This is the battle that gave rise to the dish Chicken Marengo but almost saw Bonaparte’s goose cooked 15 years early.

And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Excellent

Are there many rule changes for BBB Napoleonics?

No really, though we have some house rules. We don't replace leader casualties. We considered (and forgot) to give +1 for combined infantry/cavalry assaults. I find at the grand tactical level it works quite fine without a lot of changes.

We also don't replace leader casualties in the ACW, since it seems that both sides operated with a shoe-string staff compared to later European armies.

For Waterloo, we had heavy artillery (12 lb) give a column shift when firing. There are some other house rules from another group in the Yahoo group files, nothing too major.

We are going to try this again this coming Thursday. I have merged a couple tiny Austrian light infantry units into larger line brigades. I'll take the Austrians myself and see if they can be pushed all the way across the table. Damn the torpedoes...

Good to see this classic battle getting the BBB treatment!

Personally I favour minimal tweaks - I have enjoyed some good Napoleonics games using the standard BBB rules untweaked. Maybe just one or two for period flavour or scenario-specific.

The best laid plans... Marengo test fizzled. I'm off to Maine and Canada soon, so the next test is scheduled for late September. We'll see....
