50 cent challenge - the not-Palantir
« on: September 02, 2017, 11:51:06 PM »
My trip to the third local goodwill store netted me some trucks, long wooden sticks of a soft wood that will come in handy at a later date, and this plastic thing. I have no clue what it actually is?

When I picked it up it reminded me of Isengard.....so I'm now looking for a suitable sphere to glue on top, and some washers to base it on so it stays upright. A darkgrey paintjob with plenty of black wash, and a Oil Stain paintjob with plenty of gloss varnish on the not-Palantir should make this a nice scenic piece for Frostgrave or Mordheim.

Nice. Just be careful not to look into that palantir-thingy. I've heard bad stories about the last guy who did!

I'd be tempted to give it  variety of toppers. Statues and the like.

If you were playing 10mm or 6mm fantasy, that would be a perfect wizard tower.

Same here.  Maybe magnetize or peg them so you can swap as needed and still be fairly sturdy.

A marble might make for a good palantir, especially if you can find a darkish one with a bright yellow or orange catseye inside.

I've been looking at 10mm to play Minihammer, but dismissed that because I don't want another scale and none of the players are close. Thx for putting that idea back into my head <sigh>

I did this and still have an Empire, an Orc and a WiP Chaos Army in 10mm for Minihammer. All currently safely stored since I move from Berlin to Hannover (which is sadly still a few hours from Amsterdam).

Minihammer is a great opportunity and much better than playing at the original scale!

I will not be doing 10mm :P Don't have the time, or money to add another scale right now :)

Anyhoo, progress on the not-Palantir.

Metal base, glued to plastic base, trim added with filler, top hole drilled out, magnet epoxied in, plastic cover added with basic trim that needs to be cleaned with a tiny bit of filler, magnets inserted into the bead I found which fit perfectly, sateh stick added in the top with epoxy and trimmed, needs a tiny bit of filler but other then that it is going swimmingly. I'll just make this top, the not-Palantir, and might come back at a later date for a Sauron's Eye kind of top bit.
