Looking for modern skirmish rules
« on: September 03, 2017, 07:49:33 PM »
I am looking for a modern set of wargaming rules to play 2000+ warfare, urban terrorism and such.

Any recommendations? I already know Black Ops.

Spectre Operations, Skirmish Sangin and Operation Squad Modern spring to mind.

I do not have any rules to hand, but:

"The basic squad size is eight regulars, with various additional sections (HMG, sniper etc). The rules have army lists for Royal Marines, SAS, US Marines, US Delta force, Italian Bersaglier, Iraqi regulars and Insurgents. Additional lists are available for various periods on the web site. There are currently no rules for vehicles (there is a HMMWV on the website) but you could use the Operation Squad vehicle rules."

Have you played/tested these yourself? Any thoughts on them?

I have had some good fun playing Oscar Sierra Charlie from evilbearwargames. It is small skirmish action with 5-10 miniatures a side. The rules are dead simple and leaning towards cinematic in style.

Played it at Tactica. It is worth a look. But like all these "Song of"-Games I think they are very raw and simple. In the moment I tend to BlackOps or Spectre Operation for modern Games. Skirmish Sangin is too much bookkeeping for me. I wasn't a memeber of the mathematical club in school.

One system i have forgotten: Victory Decision: Future Version (I am sorry, Agis). Works also for modern battles.

I like Skirmish Sangin for its roleplaying game approach... yes, there's quite a deal of bookkeeping etc but then again it can be used with just few minis per side and there can be "character" improvement in it. Then for bigger clashed it becomes indeed quite a heavy system.

For a more RPG Skirmish it would try to use the old classic traveller. It was - in lot of things - easy and playable.

Thank you all for the input! SPECTRE sounds the most promising to me. I think I will go that way.

I was going to say SPECTRE for the resolution mechanics and gear, PLUS the Black Ops' STEALTH RULES and SCENARIOS that are easily transported to ANY game system!  :) (and the perfect excuse to build SIX different and gorgeous game tables with lots of scenery!  :D)

Please let us know about your progresses in the "Modern" field!  ;)

Brent Spivey's 'The Battlefield' from bombshell games looks promising, though its not my bag.
