Colour suggestions for painting early war British vehicles??
« on: September 04, 2017, 07:39:03 PM »
A very good evening to you Gentlemen. Preferably using Vallejo paint does anyone have or can anyone point me in the direction of a painting guide or tutorial for my Early war/Sealion British vehicles Tilly, Morris 15cwt etc. I'm struggling especially with green for this period. Many thanks in advance
Johnny Boy.

Pre-war I would suggest Citadel Caliban Green.
Carden Lloyd MMG carrier.

This is one of the armoured cars at Bovington.

Both of these are PSC British Tank spray paint.

The M5A1 has more Citadel Agrax Earthshade.
Two photographs of the same Sherman V at the IWM:

Vallejo Russian Uniform Green is a good match.

Mike Starmer published a very good VMC recipe for Khaki Green #3, which was the standard base colour for pretty much all British home service and ETO equipment up to about the beginning of 1942.

It's two parts 921 English Uniform, one part 888 Olive Grey, one part  822 German Camo Black Brown.

I use it a lot, so I mix it up in bulk. I've used it on this Matador truck:

If you're not keen on mixing your own Khaki Green No.3 (acommon enough colour for both AFV's & soft skins) Mig Ammo do a good one (s&mstuff.co.uk are a good supplier). I also second the Starmer recommendation.

That is Vallejo Russian Uniform Green (close enough).

The rear edge of the Normandy cowl is Vallejo Russian Uniform Green, the rest is PSC British tank spray.

If you wanted to go the Bronze Green route (also valid early war), Vallejo do a good Bronze Green primer (in a couple of sizes) - they also do a box set for doing modulation effects in BG, though the bottles, rather irritatingly, are half size (7ml).
 Here's a visual representation of the Starmer Vallejo KG3 mix & the Mig;

Many thanks and very much obliged to you gentlemen. I very much appreciate the options provided and will give the mixing a go but probably end up with one of the ready made colours.
Thanks again
