50 cent challenge - Alien outpost - done
« on: September 07, 2017, 07:49:23 AM »
I decided to take up Gunbird's 50 cent challenge, quoting the original post:

Quote
Find something in the range of free to 1 euro (adjust to your local currency and use a round number) and change it into something suitable for the tabletop....be it a objective, scenic or other gaming piece. It has to be the main part of the build, you can add bits and greeblies no problem, but you must still be able to recognise it. And that is it.

Here's the start of an alien outpost, dry fitted to see how it will look. The base is an interestingly shaped piece of packaging that came with headphones. the pink dome is from a gashapon. The red arm is a piece of lego and the parabolic dish is the base of a plastic glass. So far, I'm still at 0 cent.

The plastic glass is a great idea. I've got plenty of those lying around; time to make a satellite dish.

Thanks James and Gunbird for the comments.

I made some progress on the build. The cupola is done, I think. The base still needs some door/hatch and possibly some texturing.

Thanks Din!

I considered adding stairs, ramps or concrete-like texturing for the base. In the end, I decided these may all ruin its shape, and make it look less alien. Though, I added a door.

Possibly more interestingly, the white piece of packaging forming the lower part of the build is slightly translucent. Thus, I felt it may be cool to let some light shine from the inside. I'll mask the vertical ridges when I'll prime and paint, so that only the vertical ridges will glow, hopefully in a mysterious and alien way  ::).

Here's what I built. It's a cap of a spray can, with three leds and a simple structure to allow easily replacement of the battery. I included a remote sensor with light controller, which is arguably a bit of an overkill. I'm also not convinced it fits the 50-cent challenge spirit, but I had these for ages and never get to use them).

and the same dry-fitted within the structure:

Well, the base has to be the free and up to 1 euro item and it still has to be recognisable. Even if you decide to gold plate it, it would still be in the spirit of the challenge. Fine work btw, very creative, and using things you have lying around, excellent.

Thanks Gunbird!

Even if it would have been within the spirit of the challenge, I didn't go for gold plating. Though, it's still shiny, and essentially done.

Wow, the lighting is a great touch.

Who makes the mini in the last photo? She looks like she'd fit perfectly into  a project I have in mind.

Thanks all for the nice comments. It was quite a fun project, and it's always a relief to finish something!

The mini's from here https://golem-miniatures.com/en/. I just added a silencer to her uzi.

Fo some reason, I like this mini a lot and I'm planning to paint another one at some point. BTW, You can have her naked, in swimsuit of clothed. She's very well sculpted and the casting is absolutely flawless. Though, she's quite tall (32mm to the eye).
