Figures for Ireland 1171?
« on: September 09, 2017, 12:52:06 AM »
What figure range would be usable for the invasion of Ireland in 1171?  I remember a few months ago or so there was a magazine about it, and now i regret not buying it.  I sort of remember thinking that the conquest Norman Knights might be ok, but I could be wrong about that.  What about foot troops, conquest again?  And what about the Irish?  Footsore?

The conquest Norman knights wear short sleeved hauberks which are getting old fashioned in the 12th century. They still show up in illuminations, but long sleeved hauberks are more typical. All of the fireforge sets were poleyns on their knees, which are not extant before the mid 13th century. You might have seen the preview images of the new Conquest games set, but it looks like half of the models in the box wear surcoats. There are a handful of manuscripts showing surcoats in the very late 12th century, but they do not become the typical mode of dress for a man at arms before the 13th century.

As far as I know, the most appropriate miniatures for the period you're interested in would be from the 2nd Crusade range from Black Tree Design.

I can't speak with any confidence on how the Irish would appear, for a lack of contemporary evidence. I would venture a guess that armor was not common, but that is only a guess.

Assuming you're referring to Medieval Warfare as the magazine; they offer back issues both for physical copies and digital ones at
karwansaraypublishers.com.
