Vindolanda was an excellent visit before this was found so such amazingly preserved finds are going to add a new level (literally given the location of the finds) to it. I've excavated stuff hundreds of years younger than this in much poorer condition but still considered to be 'good'!.  Finding it in those sort of conditions is incredible.

Incredible!

Vindolanda is an amazing place and the museum there is brilliant. In fact Hadrian's wall is a very rewarding place to visit, either if you walk the length or just take advantage of the excellent bus service and visit the various sites.

Thank you for posting this. What an amazing find! Are the discoveries going to lead to a drastic rethink of Roman military history and archaeology...?

I was at Vindolanda last April. I was the first into the site that day and was trying to get as close to the new dig site as possible on the off-chance of seeing something the excavators might of missed. I would have smuggled in my trowel and chutzpah had I known that lot was lying just under the surface  lol

It's a wonderful place. I was there a few weeks ago although the weather was somewhat wet...I, of course, didn't bring a coat so meant to revisit the next day when of course I went to other sites. The new YHA at the Sill is a great stopping point for the wall.

I visited Vindolanda in 1999, with my wife. It is one of my fondest memories. I would like to visit it again, now with my children -well, at 18, 21 and 22 y.o they are not children anymore!-. Hope one day I might!
