In today's Blog post, I have included images of freelance locomotives and some simple pencil sketches to show how the planning progress for the new locomotive developed.

For more information, see the Blog.

I have started the construction of my latest 1:27.7 scale steam engine. The model is based on the Hornby 0-4-0 or 'Smokey Joe' chassis and built from plastic card, scrap wood and odd plastic pieces from my 'spares box'.

More plastic card construction, particularly on the rear entry cab.

Today's Blog post shows the engine nearing completion and ready for paint. I have been busy adding rivets, bits and pieces from my 'spares box' and generally 'busying up' the model.

For more information, see the Blog.

You're a machine, Tony! Non stop!

Eager to see the running gear on this one, since it doesn't seem to have the same piston arrangement as the others.

Pistons on a vertical boilered engine are usually inboard with coupling rods either fitted to the wheels (outside frames) or outside. Historically there would have been coupling rods, but I have modelled the pistons inboard and hidden (for ease of modelling).

I'm not sure if there was ever a vertical boilered steam engine with this configuration, but as these are free lance - I'm not bothered.

The first layer of colour was this black basecoat applied in watered-down layers.

The next step was to add some Burnt Umber acrylic paint to the model. I used Abstract Burnt Umber with a tiny bit of Abaddon Black added to the mix and then applied the paint in thin, watered down layers. For more information, see the Blog.

Today's update shows how I have continued to follow the Warren Judge painting tutorial on You Tube and added some Raw Sienna to the upper surfaces of the new engine.

With most of the painting completed, it was time for the weathering, which was done with various weathering powders and ground-up pastels.
