Warlord Games Orcs

I finally found the old Wargames Factory Orcs sprue on the Warlord site! I had thought them OOP all this time.

Nicely different - shame they went with green rather than brown...

I've a load of these, and I should probably unload the extra sprues.  I painted up 12 and while nice, they're on the replacement block (I'm doing round two for all my fantasy dungeon crawl minis...replacing those which underwhelm me with better options).  They were nice for something different, indeed.

I had two boxes.  After putting together 3 or 4, realized they were um ... crap.  I appreciate the effort to give them more of a LOTR / Hobgoblin / DnD look, they were just too fiddly for me.  Details were odd, with terrible mold lines.  Weapons broke while trying to attach them.

Think I sold them all for like $10.

Was sad to do it, since I really hoped they were good.  Nothing but a disappointment, though.

I'll tell you precisely why they were odd. :D  The made a conscious decision to have the torsos "work" both front and back, allowing you more flexibility.  This meant all of the torsos were rigidly straight up and down.  Gave a very odd appearance when modeled sometimes.  I had been hoping for more plastic Orc kits from WF before they stopped designing stuff - but it never happened.  I don't think this kit was ever particularly popular.

That kit's a bit of a heartbreaker. The double-handed weapon arms work well, and the bows are OK, but the open hands are generally terrible. The right arms from the GW Hobbit wolfrider sets work really well with them, though; and I think the Frostrgrave gnoll arms will work too (lots of spares in the box).

Another terrible decision was giving the only helmetless head an eyepatch. A couple more two-eyed bare heads would have really helped.

You can build some reasonable-looking miniatures from the sprues, though.

Yes, it's an odd one all right

Somewhere I've got half a dozen or so of them made up and even (I think) part-painted. I'll see if I can dig them out; you can indeed make a few halfway decent proper orcs (Tolkien orcs, not GW) but there's a whole pile of useless or plain weird bits on the sprue.

The 2-handed arms are certainly  good; but so they are on the WF Anglo-Saxon set, which is overall rather better, but still a bit mixed. Some of the orc weaponry is very useful for conversions, though. I'm sure that reversible torsos sounded a great idea in some design meeting or other, but in practice, well...

Of course, now I need to find where I've got mine hidden away...

I like the helmets, which I think are either Frazetta or Hildebrandt inspired. I know I've seen them somewhere before.

I like them. The bodies could be a bit more dynamic but as core troop builders they are not half bad.  Quite cheap to.

I had seen a few decent mesh ups combining these guys with some of the Perry  Bros, plastic medieval figs.
