Warning: PVC + Daler Rowney Soluble Matt Varnish
« on: October 09, 2017, 09:14:49 AM »
I have been using the brush-on Daler Rowney for quite a while now with great success. I think it was here on LAF that I read about it. Perfect for metal, resin, plastic...but not PVC.
I found out that both my Reaper Bones and Walking Dead miniatures were getting shiny and sticky after several months. And the only thing they got in common was the varnish. Both Bones and Walking Dead were not gloss varnished with a spraycan as I had read enough horror stories about that combination (and my Zombicide miniatures are still sticky…:().

So no, it’s not a scientifically proven fact, but I recommend not using bvrush-on Daler Rowney on PVC miniatures. I will now only use the brush-on Army Painter’s anti-shine on them.

This has popped up from time to time on LAF.

I had the same experience with the figures from Mansions of Madness and D&D boardgames. I use Winsor & Newston matt varnish. If I may be a consolation - I was able to remove the sticky coat with white spirit, without affecting the (acrylic) paint job. I now use Vallejo Matt Aribrush varnish (from the RC range) on these models without (as for now) similar affects. They stay mat.

I like my games like my orange juice: pulpy with no added sugar or artificial sweeteners

...were not gloss varnished...

I always gloss varnish figures before the DR goes on.  LINK
