Matte Spray over Gloss Varnish?
« on: September 30, 2017, 02:17:34 PM »
All,
I have a collection of 40mm figures I've been trying to sell. They are gloss varnished, and I've been told that may be the reason I haven't sold them. Can I spray dullcoat or similar over the gloss without obscuring detail?

I'm fairly certain that's how you're supposed to do it. Matt varnish doesn't generally apply much protection, it's for getting rid of gloss.

It can be bloody temperamental stuff, though. A touch of humidity 500 miles away and it may decide to throw a fit and ruin your figures.

Matt over gloss is fine - do it all the time.
I find brush-on matt more reliable, but spray is quicker, unless it goes wrong , of course.  >:(

I'm in the mid-Atlantic US, and right now it is perfect Fall weather.  I am hoping that is okay.  AIr is dry and no humidity.

I paint all my 28mm figures with a gloss varnish before finishing them with a matt coat.  Just need to leave 24hrs between the gloss and matt but in your case I'm guessing that won't be a problem

I'd recommend either Winsor & Newton Professional Matt Varnish if you want to spray, or Daler Rowney Soluble Matt Varnish if you want to brush it on.

They are currently varnished with two coats of Modge Podge Satin.  If I go brush on, I will use Modge Podge Matte.  Otherwise, probably Krylon Matte Spray.

I swear by Testor's Dullcote, never had any type of issue (touch wood) and it's matte as can be.

I always gloss varnish then matt.

Always brush-on, never spray.

Article on my website from years ago LINK  Still how I varnish though.

Yes indeed gloss and then matte is also the way to seal in decals and not have them show any film.

I find brush-on matt more reliable.

I do to and I have given up on sprayon completely.
