Pirate Game at Triples - pics
« on: April 06, 2009, 04:40:02 PM »
I've not yet been tempted by Pirate games but this one at Salute was irresistable. It was simple gorgeous. I don't know the name of the man who did most of the work (I'm trying to find out) but he's a scenery genius (he can be seen in the first pic at the far end of the table, holding a bottle). I think the figures were 40mm bit I haven't confirmed that.

First pic shows the extent of the board with, in the foreground, a part of what I take to be a palm covered island with the mainland harbour at the other end of the table. Two large vessels are in the straights between the island and the mainland with another disappearing beneath the waves in the clutches of a Kraken.

Here is the larger of the 2 vessels, standing off the jetty on the mainland with several of its boats heading for the shore.

Close up of the fort guarding the harbour mouth.

A track leading through the jungle from the fort to the jetty. I'm not sure what the figures in the foreground of this pic are doing - just creating atmosphere?

Redcoats on the path to the jetty.

I'm guessing this is an advance guard of pirates, defending the jetty from the redcoats until pirate reinforcements arrive in the ship's boats. I could be wrong. :D

The reinforcements on their way in.

The other ship, cruising off the island. Another pirate? I'm not sure.

Meanwhile, on the island, some natives are doing something ugly with a cooking pot.

It's all looking rather beastly in the pot.

More native chappies make their way across a dodgy bridge and down the island track.

The smaller vessel. Probably not a ship. A sloop perhaps?

The big vessel. Maybe a ship or possibly a brig?

This was a stunning looking board. Incredibly, those lovely vessels were made by the guy running the game out of the same polystyrene foam which he used for making the island. It was shaped and then planked with cardboard to result in these amazing vessels.

Apologies for the weird lighting - I've corrected it as far as possible from the very gloomy, muddy light that prevails in the main hall at Triples. The photos were taken with my phone camera so are not the best quality but do give an impression of a great game.

Absolutely brilliant layout, and ships, now there's ships. Where's that bit of polystyrene I had lying around ?

The big'un is a "full ship" rig (brigs & brigantines only had the two masts). With spanker on the mizzen and jib stay.

The cutter type looks like a nicely period version of Le Renard in rig

beautiful bit of work if you don't mind me saying so.

Holy cow!  Those trees are utterly amazing!

Even if the game was not very exciting, it would be wonderful to play with such terrific terrain!
