Illustrated books about XVth century
« on: November 13, 2017, 06:56:57 PM »
I am painting Perry's plastic medieval soldiers, and I was wondering whether there were good illustrated books with drawings (like Froissart's chronicle illustrations) and sources (armors, weapons, standards...) of the XVth century.

I already own the Funcken, and a few Ospreys.

One you should check out is Gerry Embleton and John Howe’s The Medieval Soldier.

It is packed with glossy photographs of re-enactors in the highest quality reproduction equipment and costume both military and civilian and all shot on location in Switzerland.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Medieval-Soldier-Campaign-Recreated-Photographs/dp/1859150365

For period illustrations I go googling and see what you come up with.

Excelent books.
Yes its not a mistake, i have 2 diferent books from Europa Militaria Medieval soldier on Campaign.

If you speak french you also have the following:

Editions Errance - L´homme Dármes au moyen age - Florent Renaudin (lots of photos of reenactors and a good text and illustrations)

Editions Heimdal - Azincourt et la vie quotidienne en 1415 - Christophe Gilliot (the same as above)

Hey, thanks for the recommendation. Ordered it!

To the original poster, you said you have a few Ospreys... getting some more of them is always a good idea. In particular I'd recommend their Campaign series - each one has a really detailed look at one particular campaign or battle, and has some fantastic double-page battle scene artwork (the best by painter Graham Turner). For the 15th century there are some really good ones for the Wars Of The Roses (Towton 1461, Tewksebury 1471 and Bosworth 1485), plus The Fall Of English France 1449-1453 is great.
I know it's not perhaps what you were asking for (original 15th century sources), but if you are ever thinking of getting some more Osprey books, check them out.
