Clearly this technique is only any good on foam terrain boards, not MDF etc!  ;)

After a fashion. You could always pre-drill locations for the tree pins to be inserted.  It’s not as flexible, it would work.  You could even do that on your wall-filler hills.

wonderful work.

second the use of insulation boards for tree-sticking, although I found I had to put two spikes into the bottom of each tree, to stop them 'turning' too easily.

Ah! An interesting enhancement - hadn't thought of that. Thank you :) Will have to give that a try on the larger trees.

a brown water meandering river makes me really happy, and a brown water meandering river with a pebbly ford makes me really really happy.

Modelled on the River Usk in flood, Cubs bach ;)

How do you do the water effect on your rivers?
Some fancy pour-on product, or just gloss varnish?

This is five layers of yacht varnish over matt emulsion paint.
All the rivers on these boards (except for the new '15mm mountain' board) were previously done, several years ago, using Woodland Scenics 'Realistic Water'. It was shite. Never went off properly, even though carefully poured only to a depth a 1mm-2mm.
Over subsequent hot summers, the whole thing bubbled up horrendously, then set hard. Then in subsequent years, melted again, bubbled up again even more, and set harder still. Might have been great for a gas-infested Martian swamp, but completely ridiculous for a running river. So a couple of months ago I literally scoured off the whole lot from all the boards, chipped off all the fecking bubbles, re-sanded out the river bed along its entire length, filled any dinks and dents, sanded it again, repainted (brown this time, not green!) and then proceeded with multiple layers of yacht varnish. Which hopefully won't bubble up when my wargames room gets hot in the height of summer. So far, so good, and looks greatly improved.

So my advice, for what it's worth, would be to keep it simple, use super-shiny-and-tough yacht varnish applied in multiple thin layers, and do not touch fancy-schmanzy 'water modelling' products with a bargepole...
:)

I have come very late to this one - but this is fantastic! If anyone is going to get me to collect 15mm it’s Mark Copplestone and this thread!!!

I appreciate the reply about the trees. It makes sense, particularly with the board as you have it set up. I'll give it a think (as well as the two pin enhancement) and see what I come up with.

Here's a sorcerer / necromancer, possibly Stygian, from Crom's Anvil.

Quite what he's doing in the Pictish Wilderness, who knows? You can never tell with sorcerers. But he'll be up to no good, certainly.

He's a very nice little figure, although very slightly 'flat', and considerably more diminutive than the Copplestone Barbarica figures as you can see.
I guess he's 'true 15mm' whereas they are pretty much 18mm if not a little bigger.
Anyway, he's a nice little character to add to the mix.
