If you want a truly unique insight to the war, check out Hector MacQuarrie's How to Live at the Front: Tips for American Soldiers http://www.archive.org/details/howtoliveatfront00macq MacQuarrie was a Scottish captain sent over to the US to teach us Yanks how to survive in France. The book was published in 1917 and has chapters covering everything from avoiding VD to caring for cavalry mounts in a gas attack! Alibris lists several copies for under $30.

Two books I own and am very partial to are listed on the site Adam listed, The First Hundred Thousand by Ian Hay and Kitchener's Mob, Adventures of an American in the British Army by James Norman Hall. Hall later wrote a trilogy about the mutiny on the Bounty that is also superb if you are in to that.

Lyn Macdonald is great for the western front: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/ref=ntt_athr_dp_sr_1?%5Fencoding=UTF8&search-type=ss&index=books&field-author=Lyn%20Macdonald. Very readable and does a good job of mixing personal anecdotes in with "the big picture".

For the benefit of the continental LAFers I see that www.archive.org has several works in French and German, among other languages available for free download. http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=subject%3A%22World%20War%2C%201914-1918%22 A Spanish aquaintance of mine found an incredible rare account of the British sack of Manila in 1762, so it is well worth poking about there.
