Thank you Delbruk I thought that too and decided they stopped and discussed, with the pointing Grenadiers speaking to the Commander, to continue into another direction

Judging from the pic below it was possible to drive that beast through open hatch:



I bet just like with other tanks there was a device to lift up seat and instruments to the required height.

I used the picture below as a sort of reference when I started the project. You can clearly see the tracks spinning and the Driver looking out of an open hatch and thought it would be alright if I model it that way

Nicholas Moran "Inside the chieftains hatch" toured a Panther on you tube. Apparently there were controls that allowed you to drive with your head out the hatch.

Personally, I don't think it makes much difference either way, the converted models are very nice and very creative.
