Rules for Moon or Mars-based, Ground Combat?
« on: April 14, 2024, 11:46:21 PM »
I want to do some squad to platoon sized, SciFi games, and am interested in coming up with some rules to do that, since other than the Lunar rules, for very small groups if troops, I'm not aware of any miniatures rules that might be appropriate for that. Might even want to stretch to company sized games at the top end, occasionally, though may need fast-play, streamlined rules for that.

I want to use some of the excellent, Ground Zero Games Moongrunt figures for that, along with perhaps some others too, in the larger 25mm+ sizes.

Of course, there's the Dirtside II rules also, but can't recall if they have any special rules for combat in low-G environments, dangerous atmospheres, and/or the vacuum of space.

Thinking for the vacuum/toxic side, even minor wounds can be dangerous, since suit penetrations can lead to death. Perhaps wealthy nations will provide self-sealing suits, but those on a budget might not care about their people as much.

Fights for air, water, food, and other resources seem likely far away from home, especially if resupply doesn't happen on schedule.

Throw in some aliens too, just for fun.

Anyone done this or working on it?

Thoughts, other ideas, resources?

A few years ago the South London Warlords did such a game at SALUTE The rules are likely to be on their website. Shortly after that there was an article in Miniature Wargames on using Bolt Action for the same. You might be able to find that on their website (it isn't easy to navigate) or if I can find them out I could scan them for you. I've painted up some GZG figures and I'm interested in doing this too.

Lawd, as I said before, false memories haunt me...

I thought Jon had put out some Stargrunt II extensions when releasing the Moongrunt figs, but no joy. I even skimmed through SGII hoping for a clue.

None found.

Now I have a vague recollection of other rulesets mentioned; I will give a hunt.

As always, breath holding is contra-indicated.

There was also a set of rules in a WI within the last few years but I cannot recall which issue - pretty sure it was before 2022 I think, I stopped my subscription as I got it for my dad and he passed away before that.

Wanted to point out Aliensurfer's link to Moon Cresta is supposed to be 6mm and requires something called Iron Cross, but as both are Pay What You Want, no loss if they don't work. Assuming you have no objections to WargameVault...

Cheers Doug, I hadn't noticed that, I only stumbled across whilst trying to recall what Moon based game I had seen recently - which was actually the Lunar one. I didn't notice A/ the scale and B/ the need for some other rules.

A 6mm game sounds interesting. Dual use for those craters I am going to build...
