« on: November 08, 2017, 02:50:47 PM »
Hello all

Can someone confirm me if the BTD range of egyptians can be used for the Cesarian period (Cleopatra) ?

https://eoeorbisuk.com/collections/ancient/ancient-range_egyptians

Thank you for the help.

Cheers

Rui

He,
from the research I did, I found that Cleopatra's army was a typical Macedonian-Greek army of the Diadoches type, with the addition of Roman mercenaries and Legions remaining faithful to Marco Antonio. The fanciful, colorful Egyptian Units are an Hollywood addiction.
I think you can do your Cleopatra's army without the BTD's Egyptians.
Cheers,
Sergio

LotB, thanks for your help.

Lets put it in other way.
I want to do a small egyptian force of about 20 figures for the period mentioned. No mercenaries or romans just egyptians.
What figures should i use for it?

My guess would be the hard-to-nail-down 'imitation legionnaire'. Or possibly these guys as they look a little more hip with their groovy mail shirt and not grandad's linen cuirass.

Cleopatra VII was the last ruler of the Ptolemaic Dynasty. So what you are looking for are miniatures for a Late Ptolemaic Successor army. This page has a lot of helpful information and images for the Ptolemaic army:

https://deadliestblogpage.wordpress.com/2017/06/12/armies-of-the-successor-kingdoms-the-ptolemies/

This site has some good ideas for Ptolemaic miniatures:

http://www.ancientbattles.com/WAB_Ptolemaic/1stCorps_Ptolemaic.htm

Finally, a number of other 25/28mm figure manufacturers make suitable miniatures. For example, these would work perfectly well:

To find other suitable lines, you could do an online search for "ptolemaic successor miniatures."

Sadly as fun as New kingdom style warriors would be Cleopatra's soldiers probably looked more like this

Dark Fable have released Ptolemaic thureophoroi and thorakitai (expensive but if you are looking for small numbers only may be the go).    Seem to be based on the warriors in the earlier posts.

https://www.darkfableminiatures.com/store/c1/Featured_Products.html

I really do like that late Centurion - now all you need is a Machimoi officer figure (with padded armour) and replace his head, give him the right shield........Aventine also make some Machimoi Pike, some in linothorax.   Officer has separate head with ornate helmet.   Their unarmoured machimoi may be handy for some late rabble?

Aventine are in the course of producing these Sort of Late Hellenistic types, see the Thorakitae at the bottom of this post:

As they are Aventine they are also very, very nice...

Someone beats me to Aventine... anyway I would recommend them too...

best packs are the new thorakitai for armoured troops maybe with some imitation legionaries. Thureophoroi are supposed to appear shortly...

I am also partial to 1st Corps, their successors are very nice. They have both Thureophoroi and Thorakitai.

Phalangites seems to have been replaced by thorakitai or thureophoroi by the end of the Hellenistic period.

The one from dark fable seems nice in pictures, but they are also pricey.

Played AC Origins by chance? ;)
Since I was pondering a similar theme, I asked Aventine about their Ptolemaic infantry, and they seem to offer various sprues of separate heads for every Hellenistic ranges. Maybe worth a thought, too.

Mad Doc, if i recall well i dont remember to see egyptian heads on Aventine but i will check again.
I will think about it and probably end up with a good mix of heads on my small force. :)

I dont know AC Origins. Is it a set of rules? Any good? Simple to learn?  :D :D
If so i may give a try.
