Best Normans?
« on: November 05, 2017, 08:56:37 PM »
Hi guys,

Does anybody have recommendations for good Norman minis? I'm in love with the bob ones, but the range is, er, limited. And if their Facebook page is anything to go by, it's far from certain that you'll receive what you ordered.

It seem to me that many ranges are fairly old, and tend to have fairly chunky proportions. I don't mind the Conquest plastics, but with only one armoured body in the kit, they're not quite what I'm after. I'm looking for armoured cavalry, spearmen, and archers.

Cheers,

Matt

There is a new range coming from Footsore early next year. Sculpted by Paul Hicks, they look very good from the previews on their facebook page.

The former Saxon Miniatures range, now sold by Warlord, perhaps: https://store.warlordgames.com/collections/dark-ages

Parts of Perry's Crusader range should also work for 1066: https://www.perry-miniatures.com/index.php?cPath=23_33_52&osCsid=ffu5g4ln6oti1afoj4dmdjekh1

Wait for the Footsore range, simple as that.

Thanks all, pretty comprehensive suggestions!

I did also find some nice looking resins from V & V, but their range is pretty small at the moment. I think ebob's are some of the best-proportioned miniatures I've seen, and everything else seems to pale a bit in comparison, but there seems to be no chance of his range ever expanding (I did email him about it).

My SAGA Norman army is composed almost entirely of Perry Crusade figures, using unarmoured for levy and warriors, and armoured for hearthguard and specialist groups (eg warrior crossbow).  Other than lesser armoured types such as troops in gambeson or akheton, the range is more than sufficiently complete for such purposes.  Had they been around at the time, I would have included some of the eBob Norman spearmen.  (Might do anyway.)

I recently received the V&V Normans and they are imo the best Norman mini's on the market. When I start painting them I will start a painting log here.

Edit: The detail is amazing.

I’m actually asking about them with no intention of using them for historical gaming- any chance (provided you have the figures, of course) that you could post a comparison of them with GW’s LOTR range?

I can't post comparison pictures with GW Lotr, but I am certain they are taller. They have no heroic proportions but they are a couple of mm taller than most other historicals. I have Claymore Casting HYW and Saxon Miniatures Vikings and Saxons. The V&V miniatures are taller, but with realistic proportions and details. They are imo phenomenal miniatures!

I need to check it, but I think they are of the same height as the Perry plastic HYW range, which are also taller than most historical metals.

Thanks very much for that mate. Might still be able to use them for men of Arnor, but I might just need to order one or two to make sure.

The Drabant range looks very nice from the photos I've seen. I've got some of Drabant's Anglo Saxons and I really like them.

Mike and Alan Perry sculpted the GW LOTR range.

I have used the Perry Crusaders as Rohan cavalry and infantry. The Perry Crusaders are very similar in size and style to the GW LOTR.
