I paint armies so use the Hammers & Dr Zombie cork method for 25/28mm figures and card squares for 15/18mm figures.

If I am painting skirmish figures then the figure is already on a base with the groundwork added and then hot glued to the cork, rarely comes off.

I also mount my corks on a 25mm and then a 30mm washer to stop it from falling over.
Wargamers do it on a table.
