Thug, Thief, Treasure Hunter - Newby Question
« on: November 12, 2017, 09:12:56 PM »
New in Frostgrave. Creating my first List. I have no idea which of the three Soldiers should i take, which of them make more sense for a starting list?

The Thief is faster than the Thug, so is he better to collect a treasure because he can run faster after pickup the gems? Or should i invest in a Treasure Hunter, is he the better choice for collection the coins? But he is expensive.

I start with the lower cost ones to begin with, the treasure hunter is a favorite though.
He that trades Liberty for Security will soon find that he has neither.

I always take a thief, just for the move in a starter band.

As you're on a budget, a thief and thug are pretty much my standard build.

The thief for the extra inch move so you can get a piece of treasure ASAP. You need a number of bodies/models to lug your treasure off the table, so there is no point in a starting war band in wasting money on some top flight fighters.

A thug because they are slightly better in combat and will power.

usually I try and start with two of each, a couple of archers, along with an Apothecary, and a war hound, and hey presto that's your 10 war band members for a starter.

Treasure Hunters get bought after a few games and are really useful. I've played with 4 war bands now and never started with a treasure hunter. It's similar to archers and rangers...start with archers and upgrade to rangers later.

I'd say don't think too hard on it as they'll mostly die in a game or two anyways. You'll be constantly buying new troops. Feel it out as you go.

This x 100! Just take wat you think what is cool. I've seen people theorize a lot about different soldiers and which one is the best. But then a Warhound engages a Barbarian and rolls a 20. Bam, out of the game. Yes, some soldiers are better than others but the board, spells, scenario and dice rolls can have way more effect in a lot of games than just their stats. So yeah, pick what models you like 8)

My thinking for a starter warband is you want to fill all ten slots.  That generally requires you to take a number of cheap choices to avoid running out of points.  I generally take at least two thugs and two thieves and two archers in a starter list.  After that, I look to see what else I can afford.  A Treasure Hunter is certainly a good option for at least one slot.

I always look for the 7 move as I like to have a couple of minis that can just concentrate on getting the treasure off the table. When you have more money treasure humters and rangers are good for this.

Infantrymen. The best damned soldiers. Cheap, easy to replace, and can be very brutal with the two hander. On your op, I would wait getting a treasure hunter until you are two or three games in. Second of you can afford it.

Thieves are the best starters in the gane for nicking treasure tokens. A combination of thieves, Telekinesis, and Leap can get a lot off the table early in the game at liw levels.

However a Thaurmaturge can buff some of the stronger types to good effect- though you will only be able to afford one or 2 and will then have to pad out with thieves, thugs and war hounds.

Something else that just dawned on me! Obviously, what wizard you take has everything to do with what will work best for your starting warband..... especially what spells you get/take... I lean toward the enchanter because I like the "Father Christmas" look of the miniature.... and, very obviously..... the enchanter is geared more toward a fight-type war band..... that said.... I usually lean toward fighter type members and also include at minimum a thief for the move...
