Monster/Kaiju miniatures?
« on: November 13, 2017, 09:02:22 AM »
I'm after some monsters/Kaiju for fighting some robots. Preferably between 3-6cm tall. And cheap... definitely cheap.
The monsterpocalypse stuff is nice but not very detailed looking. Prepainted plastic/PVC stuff is fine.
Any ideas anyone?

Hmm, I don't think Monsterpocalypse stuff is bad at all actually. I only have the bigger ones from the not-Cthulhu faction and a couple of random other bitz tho so maybe they are better than average. Not at all sure where you could find better details for really cheap. Maybe Star Wars or D&D clix type figs but not sure about quality. You could also look at Japanese Gashphons -- there's bound to be something there -- but while they may have decent quality the prices tend to be in the not-too-cheap category if you have to order them from somewhere like HLJ:

I don't have any monsterpocalypse stuff but thought it looked like it lacked detail. Do they have a good level of detail, is it just the prepainted job that makes them look quite flat (I'd repaint)? I see a seller on ebay sells some fairly cheaply.

Have a look on the (sadly dormant) Tiny Solitary Soldiers blog - Spacejacker repainted some goos Monsterpocalypse minis and they came out great:

MonPoc is great stuff, but unfortunately not very cheap anymore. A couple of years ago you could find loads of them for cheap, but at a minimum of $1.25 a piece for the small ones things get expensive fast. But they are excellent miniatures!

Even at current prices the larger Monpoc figs are a good buy.  Smaller units not so much now (although some commons are still reasonable) but the kaiju themselves and the buildings are generally worth a look.  Their detail level is fine, although they'll benefit from being rebased.  And in most cases any kaiju you buy will actually be two models not one, due to the dual-form thing in the rules.  Helpful if you want to do multiples of the same critter or kitbash cyborged, parasitized, or zombified versions.

More expensive but nicely prepainted are the Monster Hunter figures which can be found on ebay.  The small ones (3-5cm) are not as expensive.  I have both Monsterpocalypse and hunter figures.  They all work well though most of the Monster Hunter stuff is not exactly Kaiju as I envision them.

Within the collectable ranges of dnd miniatures are are some real gems for giant monsters, but I must say I'm always on the lookout for more myself. I have CAD files for 2mm skyscrapers, one of these days I will actually do something with them.

Yep. I saw on Aliexpress some great Capcom ones but they are $20 each and I wasn't sure on the scale (probably too big). Also I have a couple of metal minis from Macrocosm, formerly Hasslefree, which will really fit the bill.

Wow... I'm an idiot. I just realised that I have sculpted my own creatures for several companies that would suit being Giant Monster minis...
e.g. this one is perfect for one that has crawled from the depths. And this

Look for Japanese toys. I have found them at various import stores, and at Asian groceries here in the northwest USA. One brand is Furuta toys. Have a number of movie & anamai monsters in the size you are looking for. I have also seen a set of Godzilla & other monsters at Toys R Us in that size. they were all about 4" to 5" tall in a set of 6.

I'm quite curious what people are looking for in "Kaiju miniatures"

Sort of mentioned above, but Japanese toys (gashapons) are in the 5-7cm size range, usually in the $4-10 dollar range (more for some of the bigger guys like King Ghidorah), and some are in lots of 4-7.  Available from ebay or Clawmark.
E.g. http://www.clawmarktoys.com/shop/godzilla/godzilla-high-grade-set-5-bandai-1998-6-pieces-with-baragon/

Look for "High Grade" or "HG" in the listings, not "SD" or "Super Deformed".

Some of mine in action this summer here: http://twothreesixmm.blogspot.ca/2017/07/the-true-story-of-bowling-green-massacre.html

For buildings, there are some pretty good 1/500 buildings on aliexpres.

You know I'm kind of surprised there isn't more interest in the Kaiju genre overall. I mean those movies are at the forefront of miniatures in movies! Maybe its the act of stomping on that scenery that puts others off from the setting.  :D

After spending hours on a building just to see it flattened?

I was surprised that GW did not do a Knight sized Tyranid  when Pacific Rim came out.
