Thank you chaps.  :). Presently working on aligning the railroad tiles with the main tile and building the station platform (in essence, a ramp). The rail was hacked from the Second Boer War board I started about 3 years ago so it’s quite a fiddle to get aligned.

@Matt. Thanks. A lot of the suggestions for detail came from FifteensAway.  :D

Looks good, the building bases blend well with the base board. Can't see the pump and water trough though. ;)

Darn I forgot about the pump. I’ll try and remember to take a photo tomorrow. Sorry   ;)

Thanks Matt and Gary.

I’ve yet to add the ramp, which will come off at 90°, but the platform is assembled. It should be big enough to accommodate the as yet unbuilt Combination Car.

For out-of-town games, the platform will be swapped out for an earth bank.

Man - this project is (like everything else you do) insane. In a good way.

Do you think about other projects when you're immersed in something like this, or are you one project at a time kind of guy?

That’s a very good question Karsten.

.

So in short: when researching I think widely but when making  I focus narrowly.

Posting wips on LAF is actually an extremely useful part of the process for me. When building, it causes me to stop, think, recap, take advice, review, etc.  The forced pause of posting encourages me to review the images etc and changes often result, especially when I reflect on the comments of others.  That said, sometimes I stop to review and conclude that the project is no longer working for me - so activity comes to an abrupt halt and I veer off to something else (possibly completely different) that was in my mind during a research phase.

It is interesting to see how we all work in both different and similar ways. The internet allows us to share thought processes more easily and also allows us to adapt how we wargame (here on LAF it's the creative side of the hobby). Over the last ~5 years my painting/terrain making/story telling skills have benefit from conversations on here. Even if it means only lurking at times (reading a thread and not commenting).

Though I know I can be a talkative butterfly like that Mason fellow.

tl; dr - don't stop doing whatever (and however) it is you're doing.

Re: Silent Butte: UD 05/01 Water pump, station ramp, telegraph pole question

Thanks chaps, comments always appreciated  ;)

Still very WIP Paul but thank you  :

I’ve remembered to photo the water trough with added pump. Just so happens I’ve placed it on the ‘station’ platform that now has its ramp attached.

The platform ramp is removable, being weighted to stay still with a couple of studs connecting to two of the platform posts.

I’m texturing the railroad bases, which have peg holes for telegraph poles. The poles are 10cm apart so say 6m (18ft) at scale. I can’t find any reference to Old West telegraph erecting practises, except for a few images (such as this one from about 1860):

NB: my spur line to a mine is set circa 1880

Looking at this image, I guess the poles are  about 16 feet tall and roughly the same length apart. In the far background, the distance between poles is about a wagon length. It’s a drawing, and there’s perspective to consider, but I’ve hypothesised at 18 feet  centres and 16 feet tall.  At scale, this would be 10cm centres and 8 Cm tall. Any view on whether this might be about right for a late-ish 19thC Old West spur line?

Cheers  :)
