Recently i've studied quite in deep this conflict...from a wargame point of view is very playable because :
1) good information also if in French but with many TOEs and maps
2) few troops involved (i m referring above all to French) so with no more than 40 (scaled) casting and maybe few more up to double pavillons noirs you can reconstruct real battles
3) very detailed maps of small battles available

battles like Son Tay included
Zouaves and Turcos..gunboats
as well as Marines..so larger
forces were involved as well
as the small skirmishes,,
