The metallics before varnishing looked very similar to this.As it pretty much my bog standard approach to metallics.
Only difference this one's coming upto 30 years old and varnished with Letra-coat.
The rest of the empire force had High-coate matt varnish.
Although I'm not sure how well it shows up in the picture.

I figuredit was in jest. It  just gave me the opportunity to show just how temperamental this Colour Forge Matt varnish is proving to be.Rather than just saying it's naff ( otherwise  someone will disagree, or say Your not using it properly ::) ) I used it on a couple of printed Winged lancers as test pieces. It shrank and cracked the painted clothing on one figure. Buggered the metallics on all three. Muted the blending on the wings of one but not the other. All were painted at the same time all having the same paints and colours from  exactly the same pallet.
As I said it was my own fault, I knew it was temperamental, and grabbed it even though I'd a tried and tested varnish right next to it.

It’s been a very wet and humid summer here so anything involving varnish has been done with great trepidation.

Dunk in the bag of white sand

Say, where does one get white sand? I think this would be a good snow substitute.

If it's for big area's then you need to look at Aquatic pet shops
The last time I did a winter board 6'×4' I used Aquarium sand it cost £30 for 5kg.( I think it might of been white marble.) Don't use coral sand as snow as its nearer a cream colour when you get it home.Plus it's a little too coarse. It's what I use for my figures at the moment as I made that mistake .
On the plus side it takes colour really well lol
Serious-play is where the white sand I'm using is from.that 75g bag has done all the figures in the picture( except the train.)and the Yeti  plus I spilt the bag to boot.

Whilst I'm on a lunch break I'm going to make a new windscreen for the car .Apparently you don't always getaway with your windscreen intact. Just the side effects of lending stuff to sausage fingered people  ::)

Thanks Mark. After I asked the question, I found the site Serious-Play and ordered a bag of the white, fine sand. :)

A work in progress.
Still needs the sword blade high lights and hand touching up .But I think it's probably the right look for the figures.
Still undecided on whether the bases for the whole ser should be cobbled (which I'd have to make) or dirt grass tuft and dried leaves.

After spend my Sunday morning colouring in 'Carrot ' I figured I might as well make a start on 'Fred' this evening ( got side tracked clearing away ,and it was just sat undercoated and offending my sensibilities. Plus I'd quite enjoyed painting  the first one.)
Still got the boots and weapon to do,and the left hand to tidy up one the weapon is coloured in.
I've still not finished the sword on 'Carrot ' as I decided to use the original Kirby book cover as colour inspiration. Which ment I had to go back an tweak the leg.
I think I'll paint 'Corporal Nobby 'Next,or may be 'Vimes' ::)

Cheers Cod,

I sculpted these pre lockdown.  So I'm spending a little time each evening colouring in enough of them for their original intended roll.As a Frostgrave warband.
I've done for the night with Corporal Nobby. Also made my mind up on a basing compromise. Cobbles with a couple of fallen leaves, and one or two small 2mm tufts.
Now all I have to do is make another dozen or so bases and I'll be good to go.

So much to like about these. Figures, colour choices, painting.. I can figure out how much of it was done, but I am curious about how you did the old metal look on Nobby's breastplate?

Cheers Chaps,
I'll plod on with the rest. I've only another three Watch figure's  including Vimes to do ( ended up with insomnia so I painted another two) Then it's on to the magical members of the warband.

Shahbahraz,

Base coated of earth brown+black.
1st coat is a 60/40 mix of dark turquoise and leather brown
Then the mix plus metalic silver, and subsequent layers with more silver added to the mix.Until it's virtually metallic silver.
Shading  50/50 mix of red and black. Plus the odd dab of Tuskgor fur as rush highlights.
Base colour might come across a little better in this pick. As their armour isn't as grubby as Corporal Nobby's armour. But it's the same base formula.
