A (first) game of Napoleonic Black Powder
« on: January 28, 2018, 10:31:56 PM »
My chums and I played our first ever Black Powder game.
16 man units and moves and ranges reduced by 1/3 on a 6*4 table.

Fun was had

A nice write up. Black Powder isn't really my cup of tea but it it gets you into Napoleonic wargaming then that's a good thing.

P.S. I like the caveat at the top of your blog.
Below is a link to my blog. It's the place where I write uninteresting things about little toy soldiers. I do this because I refuse to grow up and behave like an adult.

Yes, excellent caveat  :D :D

Sounds like BP behaved as it was meant too.

Enjoyed the read - thank you. Also, nice to see the work-arounds of bringing BP to a more 'available' table size for many of us.

Thanks - none of the ideas are originally mine, all sampled from assorted other Blogs about the place.

Yeah - think it did exactly what three fools in a shed are looking for in a Naps game :)

Some folks don't like BP because the command & control rules result in units that don't move. This doesn't bother me.
What does is that often melees can go on for several turns whereas I believe they were over in the twinkling of an eye; one side or the other would go about. I've seen tiny bodies of cavalry hold up brigades for turns. I suppose a house rule requiring melees to be resolved in one turn would fix that.

That said, I'm not big on BP but if it works for you, go right ahead.
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Nice looking game and very nice blog.  I really enjoy BP due to the flexibility it provides.  You really can tailor it to your needs or how you feel a certain period should work.  And it is easy to boot!

We use other rule sets, usually Dave Brown inspired, but whenever we just want an easy game, maybe with new members we drag out BP and it never lets us down. And thanks for the pictures, they look great

Some folks don't like BP because the command & control rules result in units that don't move.

At least two Brigades per player is the answer to that (we discovered when playing lots of HC).
You have to be spectacularly unlucky not to move anything in that situation.
