Segnieur du Mont: Gloire battle report!
« on: February 19, 2007, 06:07:55 PM »
It was a hot summer afternoon, and a strong thunderstorm had driven the guard of a redoubt back to the main line. The French and Spanish generals suddenly realized that this strategic fortification was abandoned. If it could be taken, then the whole shape of the lines between the armies could change. It was too important to wait for an entire regiment to assemble.

Officers on each side called for volunteers, and in no time eager young firebrands from both armies were converging on the redoubt.

This game was run at “The Only Game in Town” in Somerville, New Jersey, on Friday night. The full gallery and report can be found here:

http://www.rattrap-productions.com/ImageGallery/main.php?g2_itemId=234

The players were divided into Spanish and French sides. Each team needed to end the game with their officer on top of the redoubt by the time the sun set. In addition, each character had personal objectives, such as exploring the board, challenging others to duels, or wounding the enemy officer.

It was a cliffhanger game, and ended on a draw, though the Spanish were clearly poised to carry the day had the sun remained in the sky just a little bit longer. The French officer lay broken and bleeding, cast down from the top of the redoubt. A number of French soldiers were also prone and gasping for breath, having suffered from terrible luck with the dice and more than their fair share of lost duels. There was a four-way tie for personal objectives, split 3-1 in favor of Spain.

Thanks to the staff of TOGIT for permission to use their store, The Shadow for confirming the reservation, and Goldwyrm for both playing in and photographing the game.[/img]

I can't even pretend it's Spanish, can I?   I'll correct the spelling for the next game, I promise!

Excellent stuff Pete!
That's what I love about Gloire, you can have a really good game with a few minis and a small playing area.

Good report. And I liked to see that the good guys won the day!!  :D

A little comment: "Ferdinand" is not an Spanish name, except if that guy had french ancenstors, (and then he would suspect of "heresy"). "Fernando" should be a more appropriate name.

Lumme! Poor old Pete's getting a right clobbering on the old foreign lingo again, and no mistaking. I hope we don't drive him away screaming with our  incessant badgering about Euro spelling and such.

Great report there. But I already said that somewhere else.

Bah! Let 'em suffer I say! It's always "great report Pete" or "I really like your rules Pete" or "thanks for setting me straight about dinosaurs Pete." He needs a good ego deflating every now and then.

I can't decide whether to blame the public education system in the US, or to claim that I'm just doing my part as the stereotypical well-meaning but ignorant American.

Actually I think the "Ferdinand" point is a tad harsh. It is the usual way of rendering that Spanish name in English (we always learned about Ferdinand and Isabella in school, rather than some chap called Fernando de Aragón), and after all the report was written in English.

It is impossible to use "Fernando" to a Northern European or North American audience, as it just conjures up images of two Swedish blokes with beards, and two girls, one of which was a rather stunning blonde with a very nice arse.

If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando...
:)

I dont think that was harsh, not in the slightest. That was a friendly advice, not more.

I took it as friendly advice. Goldwyrm, who presumably has Spanish ancestors, pointed out that none of my Spanish names were long enough, either!

I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to start a fight. I think "harsh" was probably too strong a word. I only meant it in a jokey way and it wasn't intended to be a dig at KeyanSark .

I didn't took it that way, either  :)

As prof. said, it was a friendly advice to that most notable gentlemen and rules designer called Pete

(Wow... look a that ego now!)

It's all a joke, Pete!
