Don's Small SYW Russian Army
« on: December 25, 2017, 02:17:15 PM »
I stopped playing big battallion sized games a few years back. And put my focus on skirkish games...
Thou I play small sized batallion games from time to time...with 12 man battallions or less....:)

In October I found few foundry blisters in the leadmountain and started to paint a few copplestone russians. I knew I had only one month, because another project was coming along...;)

So here are a few pics of the russians.
The plan was to get a few mini battallions, a few skirmishers, a big gun and some cavallary on the traks or october...:)

..and to more mini battallions.

And a cannon.
Sadly not from Mr. Copplestone...

Ill try to make a few more translations of the further steps in the coming days....;)

Cheers,
Don

Very nice!
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Lovely work, love seeing some SYW Russians. :) I too am going for 12 man battalions at this scale, so interesting to see your take on it.

Impressive painting.

I have also started a 28mm SYW Army so this thread is great inspiration for me though my painting isn’t nearly as good. I am doing 18 figure battalions and 12 figure cavalry units.

Nearly done the first battalion  ;D

Looks great Don! 8) Mine are not much bigger with 16 man Infantry and 8 man cavalry units. It's the only real way I can build up enough units to play games of Black Powder, Maurice and Field of Battle 2 for example. Depending on the game I also field them even smaller like yours and seems to work fine. For me it's all about the figures and not so much about battalions looking like battalions so I'm happy with it.

Lovely painting.
Looks like you could use Pikemen's Lament for rules.
It is a fun set to play with.

Interesting to hear about how others are fielding their SYW armies. I am planning to use Honours of War. Those rules suggest 20 man foot units and 8 figure cavalry units. The argument for the small cavalry units being ground area occupied. I opted for 18 man foot units and 12 figure cavalry units as it roughly equates to a 33 to 1 man figure ratio. Also a two squadron frontage (assuming 4 squadrons in the regiment) roughly equates to the frontage of a battalion in line. Anyway don’t want to go off topic. Just my opinion. Happy to start another discussion thread if people want to discuss this further.

For me small battallion are the way to go. I must admit that I am more a gamer then a historian. So historical unit size means not too much to me....;)

And thanx all around for the comments.....:)

Okay.
Here are a few more russians.

Some grenadiers...

And a little step by step pianting thing....;)
Just the colours blocked out and than armypinter washed with a highlights on the main colours...

Cheers,
Don
