BSC2018 Billchuck's Rocket Bike
« on: December 28, 2017, 09:25:45 PM »
Because really, what could possibly go wrong riding a big rocket with minimal control surfaces?

I have several of the Bombshell HB-88 bikes laying around, but I need more bikes and want more variety for a rocket bike racking game I hope to run someday. So I'll build one to that scale and sculpt a rider to go with it.

Here is today's progress.

First, I glued together a frame from plastic tube.

I fill in gaps and openings with Aves Apoxie Sculpt.

For the control surfaces, I glued two strips of 1/16" styrene sheet together after coloring one with a blue magic marker.

After cutting out the parts and sanding the edges flat, this gives me a visible line through the center of each piece so I can ensure the shaped edges are symmetrical.

At the end of the day, I have a body, two horizontal stabilizers and a vertical stabilizer.  The rider is from one of the HB-88 kits; he's either a scaling proxy for the planned rider, or I'll paint him up if I run out of time to sculpt a new rider.

Great (stupid autocorrect on the phone...) trick to colour one surface of your laminated material to make the midline easier to see, going to have to file that one away for future reference!

Clearly, I failed to complete this in time for the voting. In fact, I’ve made no progress since my last post. It’s amazing how hard it is to keep momentum on a project with an 18 month old in the house. But I do plan to finish it.

If a mod could bump this thread over to the Workbench, I’d appreciate it. I’ll keep posting there once I get the project moving again.
