Starting TYW with 6mm?
« on: January 02, 2018, 09:54:06 AM »
Hi guys, my group are going to delve into TYW using pike and shotte and Baccus 6mm. It is a period none of us know a great deal about, but we use historical gaming as a pug to learn some history.

We are going to use warlords pike and shotte rules. With battalias made up of 2 40mm x 20mm stands of pike as a 'block' with a 40x20 stand of shot either side as sleeves.

I was just wondering how many battalia + support make a good size battle? Still waiting on my rules to show up, but cannot for the life of me, find any army lists online. I basically need to know how many of each formation I need so I know what to buy.

I plan on using swedes, but any help or advice on what to get would be very much appreciated. I need to make 3 armies tailored towards the mid-end of the period.

Sorry if this has been covered before, couldn't find anything :(

Oh and happy new year to you all!

Jay

Ok, so maybe that was a bit broad, but could anyone advise any specific reading on the tactics and military formations of the era?

Again many thanks for any advice.

Jay.

The rules contain armylist for swedes and catholics. What you really want to get your hands on, is the supplement "The Devils Own" which coveres the different periods of TYW.

The rules are rather open in terms of units to a battalia, but if you think 3-4 cavalry and maybe two pike with musket sleves you are not all that off.

There are numerious excamples in the basic rule book

Cheers

Many thanks Erik, I've not got my rules yet, and using 6mm on the previously mentioned ratio. Our armies will look to be around 6 blocks of infantry (32 pike per block, in 4 ranks of 8 and 32 shot formed in 2 ranks of 8 either side. Plus around 90 cavalry (which we have not worked out how many to a base possibly 9) and 3 guns each. Is this overkill?

Again, thanks for the advice, looking forward to getting into it :)
