Mdf Desert Building For Pulp.(yes mdf not cereal packet)
« on: January 14, 2018, 05:25:28 PM »
I'm not know as a big fan of mdf buildings. But I came across Supreme Littleness design through another thread on Arab style windows ,here on Laf.

So I popped an order in that takes a brush stroke over the ranges .
Which in all honesty isn't that much in 28mm.
But what there is . Is more than good enough for me to break into my money I'd put aside for York this February.
I was going to give a critique of my purchases. However I found this more difficult than expected. Because I found myself wearing two hats. One as a gamer and one as a sculptor.
The sculptor needs ignoring as its more commercial.
The gamer is on the other hand impressed. The kit is simple clean and so neatly cut that I've only had to tack joints with a couple of dabs of super glue.for me there was no need for instructions.(not out of arrogance ,just  different feather in my cap and practice .)
Which brings me nicely to a lovely example of good communication. Once I placed an order . There was a nice email confirming my order and postal date . Which had all the instructions for my order attached as a pdf.

I actually placed two orders  As the first order is lost in my local sorting office (relief postman couldn't fit an A4 parcel through the letter box . Usual postman not an issue.)
Went to collect it and they couldn't find it.

It's not Supremes fault as it made it to my door unfortunately an idiot couldn't operate
A letter box,or a door bell.

I explained I'd placed a slightly different second repeat order (just in case the first turned up)
Supreme then sent me the new order complete with the item I'd removed and replaced from the first order. Okay it wasn't an expensive item. But the gesture was good customer service.
I spent a grand total of £26.70 pence. This is the first item, and add the others as I go.Its been sympathetically ,so it will sit neatly with my sons Crescent Root buildings.
At £16 I think its a nice alternative for this side of the pond.

Mark.

Cheers chaps.

Codsticker- the small building is a pre painted Crescent Root building.

Saldado- I've three of four of the box and barrel sets to build yet ,and at £1.20 a set. They're very good value.
(they also sent a nice email to remind me that each layer of the barrels has a chamford  edge. To give a shape to the barrel . So a dry run was advised.)

I've also a set of the railings to play with I'm making a cenataph with them.

I'd not come across this company before, their stuff looks interesting. I particularly like the ornate window.

I have also had great service from Supreme Littlness buying the same windows. They were also very responsive when I had a question on building it. Great looking color options on your Mark. I still haven't painted mine and yours looks great against the mud brick.

Great paint job! :o

I too have just discovered this company, same type of search too, and I have also order this building and two others. Like you I also have the Crescent Root buildings and I have been in the process of trying to colour match and overall paint style match.

Any chance you used some commercially available paint products and can provide the names of said paint products?

Thanks

Are the roofs removable on these buildings?

These four piles of mdf come in at a grand total of £4.80.
Yep each set is £1.20.
Haven't painted any this point as they're destined to be split into scenic bases and a few will be changing function altogether.( sinks and plant pots to name a few )
The barrels (small) are six pieces fairly, and straight forward. Only minor fiddle ,was a couple of barrel ends de laminated as they came away from the frame. So youve an outer ring and a disk.On the plus side it's very easy to take advantage of this and make a barrel with an open end.the disk/lid just needs reducing in thickness to loose that chunky mdf look(easily reduced to half its thickness with a knife)

The mixed boxes (at the back) useful market/warehouse set.only hic up is the lack of a net for the grey board boxes . As these comprises of four individual grey board sides and an mdf bottom. So they're a little fiddley .but you get good amount of boxes and trays (including the big crate ) for £1.20.

As for the set of four mdf creates a joy to put together. You can also put two base to base and make a crate twice the height .

The thin boxes nothing much to say four pieces each (2 mdf,and 2 grey board.) and a breeze to build.

The roof doesn't lift off
However its an easy thing to change (re use the parts frames for roof supports) no additional expense need.

There's nothing but off the shelf and straight out of the pot ,no nonsense,no undercoat.
I'll pop a 'How to'  on the workbench As I've just a couple of bits of kids arts&craft bits to buy in order to make more market stall boxes(using the trays and the grey board boxes) to match the Crescent Root ones.
In the meantime here's the product I used to texture buildings.
I'll be using this on a Roman villa. I don't see the point of messing around with plaster .Never use it. Even when I  have to render museum displays models. I use ready mixed tile grout and adhesive.
All I do (if its a naff fit.) is fill the joints on mdf with premixed wood filler. As it flexes with the mdf. Then chuck this stuff all over the raw mdf.
