Pulp Alley The Horror of Vice Alley Battle Report
« on: January 22, 2018, 01:12:30 AM »
A string of dastardly killings is rocking Vice Alley and there isn't a single suspect, but that isn't going to stop Betty Bixler- ace newspaper girl, and all around go-getter. Betty is hungry for a good news story and nothing is going to frighten her! No, she's already called her best and brightest to her side: her right hand gal Dottie and her trusty allies Cec and Burt, and of course the super sleuth Asta. The team is ready to solve this mystery and bring the culprit to justice.

But there might be a slight hitch, the coppers aren't too excited for that nosey news girl to come poking around and taking all the glory. Those gumshoes are ready for Betty and are on strict orders that anyone that might be working for her, or just looks suspicious has to be run in pronto.

Betty sends Cec and Burt around the front of the Flower shop to try and charm anyone they come across, while she, Dottie and Asta head down the alley.

Cec and Burt come across a rickety Grandma tottering down the road, like all the residents of this neighborhood, she's nervous, and they approach slowly so she won't call out to the flatfoot that's lurking nearby. But she definitely looks like she would know something about what's been happening.

Betty and Dottie spot a girl playing in the alley behind the hotel, maybe she saw something...

Drat! Asta was checking out the next block and ran straight into a cop who thought he looked awfully suspicious.

TURN 2:

Cec decides it's time and he engages the rickety Grandma in conversation, but perhaps he shouldn't have been dressed all in black, or maybe it was his mask, in either case, she slammed him with her cane, once, twice, three times and Cec falls to the ground, groaning in pain.

Burt, smirking at his friends failure, easily sweet talks Grandma by complimenting her new hat, she calls him a nice young man and tells him everything she knows about this horrible, terrible, no good Horror that's been plaguing her neighborhood. She calls Cec a hoodlum as she teeters past him. Burt scores the first plot point.

Betty approaches the young girl, she's heard of Betty, but she isn't sure she should be talking about whats been happening. Her daddy told her not to say anything to anybody.

Dottie assures her that there isn't anyone better to talk to than Betty. She's the best chance this neighborhood has of getting free of the danger. Dottie's pure faith in Betty does the trick and the little girl tells Dottie that she's heard rumors of bad things happening at the other end of the alley, where a drunk spends his time, maybe he knows something.

Asta does a couple of handshake tricks for the cop, who is impressed with his talents and lets him go.

At the end of the turn, Betty's league has two plot points, but lost Cec to his wounds by rickety Grandma.

TURN 3

Betty sends Asta to go around the front of the hotel, they plan to meet up in the alley, but unluckily, a paper bag is thrown out of an upstairs window knocking Asta down.

Dottie and Betty aren't wasting any time, they move down the alley to where the drunk spends most of his time.

But oh no! Did that cop recognize Betty? Is he following them? Betty says to act natural.

Burt skirts around the cop, but keeps that cook in his sights, is he being paranoid or does she look like she might be hiding something.

TURN 4

Oh no, there is a cop standing just at the end of the alley. Dottie assures Betty that she can handle the drunk, they can't risk the operation now, they are so close to figuring it all out. Dottie moves down the alley, ready for anything.

Betty watches as Dottie learns from the Drunk's ramblings that the killer smelled like bread. Betty moves around the end of the alley and sees the baker standing there laughing and talking to a cop standing across the street. Betty tries to act nonchalant as she watches the baker.

Burt is forced to stay where he is, lurking in the shadows as a cop whistles as he walks right on by.

TURN 5

Betty and Dottie converge on the baker, Betty softens him up with some hard hitting questions, but it's Dottie's sweet innocence and asking about the delicious smells coming from his bakery that get him to open up, that the cook for the deli has been acting very strange indeed.

Burt is getting ready to go talk to the cook, and she's the MONSTER!

TURN 6

Burt comes into contact with the horror of Vice Alley and oh lawd, it's  pink demon monster!!!!!

Burt isn't one to turn tell and run, and he's going to fight this thing. He owes it to Betty to see it through, even if he is only rolling a 1D6.

Even Gauge is horrified to see Burt crash and burn like that.

Slowly they turn, before Betty and Dottie can warn Burt, they turn to see a frightening sight.

TURN 7

Finally the cops start to realize that there are more important things than stopping Betty Bixler from getting her story, and they too start to fire upon the monster.

Dottie and Betty each take a turn trying to bring down the monster but to no avail.

TURN 8

All other attempts fail, but Betty steps up and with a steadying breath, she takes her shots, and manages to wound the foul beast!

But it isn't down, and enraged it stomps closer and closer. Betty always gets her story no matter what, and with a huge surge of fortitude and sass Betty meets the monster in a brawl, and gets a second hit.

A piercing scream shattered the air, everyone covers their ears and to Betty's horror the pink monster started to bubble and shift and in a great rush of air exploded out from the monster and it fell in a gushing pile of goop and started to leak into the sewer drain.
Betty has the sinking feeling that this isn't the last of this monster that she's seen. Unnoticed by Betty, an all too familiar figure lurked, watching, not missing a single detail.

Thanks for playing along, I hope you have as much fun reading this as I did playing.
Big thanks to Dave for letting me playtest this new scenario. It was crazy fun!

This may be one of the most beautiful threads I've read in a long time!!

Gorgeous terrain, engaging story, fantastic photography.

And Gauge's reaction was simply the icing on the cake.  lol lol

I think this thread alone may have convinced me to give Pulp Alley a try myself.
Enjoying the game is ALWAYS more important than winning the game.

I absolutely love these write ups! That was an awesome story to go along with the gameplay. I so need to get a game of Pulp Alley in. I have been dying to try it. I just need to convince someone to take the time to play it with me.

Very nice. Any chance this is going to be a scenario of the month? Great looking figures and terrain.

Fantastic in every aspect: the terrain, the story and the pictures. Where did those buildings come from?

A great report, thanks. Shame about Burt but I knew Betty would win through in the end, great stuff.

Fantastic in every aspect: the terrain, the story and the pictures. Where did those buildings come from?

I know that one of them is the Dust Tactics Tenement Building. It is the light tan one with the fire escapes and the large archway door in the third picture. It is a pretty nice piece, but Dave and the crew have spruced it up a bit as it doesn't come with a door, windows, or the fire escapes.

Pulp Alley is the best. Your battle reports read like the classic pulps of old. Please do a video version of this story. also please share where you got your buildings and a picture of the entire board would be awesome.

Great narrative, an excellent looking table, and cracking photos, what’s not to like. Another fantastic report. Was this a solo scenario?

Another excellent game report Bessy, you have a knack for this. I saw you had posted this morning but I would have been rushed to read it then, so I waited all day in anticipation you would repeat the success of your last game report, very pleased I did. well done.

The game flows from one action to another with no confusion, very often with PA reports things seem to be happening all over and in a seemingly random way, you have managed to avoid that. I'm not sure if it's your narrative or there does seem to be more than 1 occasion where you have figures acting in unison, which seems sensible.

I see that Burt came back to life in the last photo, although he did seem to have grown a little. ;) ;)

Dave's scenery looks awesome, MDF buildings can go in the bin compared to this stuff, it's excellent, especially with the additional bits, signs. bins etc.

Looking forward to the next game report.
Cheers
