Vindolanda - Adrian Goldsworthy
« on: January 20, 2018, 10:18:55 AM »
With the next in this series of historical novels due out this May, entitled 'The Encircling Sea' I thought it might be interesting to share my thoughts on the first book, Vindolanda by 'Dr Roman Army' himself, Adrian Goldsworthy.

It's pretty good, I thought. I enjoyed the fact that many of the minor characters feature in the Vindolanda letters. And it read 'true' to me, not like some of the dreadful sword and sandals stuff out there.

Cool, I will have to check it out. I have so far enjoyed his Warrior of Rome series.

Thanks for your comments chaps. Having watched the first of the new TV series of Britannia (the equivilent of the Roman's meet the three hundred), I am really looking forward to the next book in May.

I can't believe rubbish like that has to be put out on TV, when much better source material is around to produce something much more worthwhile. Sorry that's the grumpy old man getting something off his chest.

Cheers
JJ

Halfway through and it is not half bad, which have me somewhat surprised, nicely surprised, mind you, but surprised nonetheless. And it is that brilliant historians -and Goldsworthy is- don't make good novelists, usually. I am enjoying it,  and I must thank Jonathan for bothering to share his enthusiasm with the rest of us!
