Empire War Wagon
« on: February 08, 2018, 07:31:52 PM »
Painting up one of these oldies for a commission. I wasn't a fan back in the early 90's when it was released and generally had mixed feelings about the new Empire range at the time but over the years I've grown to rather like this era of the Empire models. Being metal the wagon went together a little wibbly wobbly shall we say. Not sure you'll find a right angle in there but it sits fine so no one should notice. It turned out to be missing the yoke to attach the horses though so a substitute had to knocked together. Got a piece from a chaos beastman chariot that thankfully fitted perfectly across the backs of the horses, made the timber from some metal sprue (from some Urban War Junkers backpacks), popped an Grey Knight icon on the end and skinned it with green stuff to create the matching wood effect. Good way through it now but plenty to still do.

Coming along wonderfully in your signature style! I'm less reserved in my admiration for the model and the range, and have one of these stashed away. Also got a couple dupes of the engineers in a random lot and they could make for good fun on their own, for example the sniper selling his services over in Mordheim.

I think most of my reservations about the Empire range back then were based on that well known knee jerk phenomenon of 'it's not like it used to be' and in the case of the war wagon I only saw the practical flaws of it if it were a real thing. I try and avoid both attitudes these days. Things change because they have to, and fantasy is just that.

Turns out, they actually were a real thing! lol How much they were a practical item though, I don't know...

Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

From what I understand they were very effective in the hussite wars, and featured heavily in hussite tactics before being integrated into bohemian tactics after the hussite defeat.

Its almost a forerunner to a pike and shot block, in that cavalry can't break it and it can be moved to refortify new positions.
never trust a horse, they make a commitment to shoes that no animal should make.

I hear you, I'm trying to adopt that mindset with AoS and...it's working! After all, aside from some ultra-rare stuff, it's not too hard to get hold of older models too.

According to wikipedia 'a battle wagon wall "fortress" of approximately 300 wagons was broken at the Battle of Wenzenbach'  :o That would make a great game

Well this is downright sensible in the worlds of AOS! the latest malign portents stories feature mechanical fortresses that walk across the realms to try and expand sigmars cities, while dwarven work gangs follow behind building outposts and fortresses for future settlers.

Impressive! Like your clean & smooth painting on these old figures.

This is one of the 90's Empire metal sets that I've never seen very nicely painted, but that lack seems to get corrected soon enough.  :)

Very good use of bits to make a yoke that fits in as if it belongs there.

Very impressive start too, the figures look painted to an extremely high level.

I have 3 or 4 (could be 5 or 6, who's counting?) of those war wagons stashed away too. Someday I may even get one painted. ;D
