Fistful of Lead SciFi latest #2: Running the Gauntlet
« on: February 09, 2018, 04:12:37 PM »
Second playtest went well. Whereas last week was more of a straight up "hard SciFi" shoot out, last night reminded me more of the glorious days of Rogue Trader. We even packed it with ancient lead from those times.
The Mission: a group of heavily armored, genetically enhanced super soldiers, let's just call them "Space Marines" for now, had to get through a disreputable backwater space port with a robot carrying the plans for a super weapon: the Doom Moon! They had to cross the length of the table to landing pad 1, where a group of not-so heavily armored, and definitely not genetically enhanced super soldiers, had secured the pad.

I liked your little ship. It's the right size for 28mm without taking up a lot of space. I am a bit interested in these rules but don't know if they would play too close to Rogue Stars to make it worth changing. But I will keep reading your game reports.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

We have a small but loyal fan base. IIRC Rogue Stars uses the Song of system? This is the same scale-wise but much different mechanics. We had 8 players and finished in about 2 hours.
But, you like what you like, and that's all right.

That's something different if you can have more than two players. That might be something to look at.

All my games are designed for lots of players. I essentially have a mini-convention every Thursday. Yes, you can play 2 players also.
If yo have time, here's about every Fistful of Lead game we've played over the years.

I would definitely count myself amongst the fan base and would echo the comments regarding multiplayer games, my local group play slooooooow and we can get a 5 player game in comfortably on an evening.

What's this "you like what you like, and that's alright"? Not something I'm used to hearing these days but a highly commendable sentiment.

I also like a lot of the sci-fi additional rules. Overwatch does make sense and the penalty is a good idea. Did you consider a dice level drop or is that too much (ie d10 to d8, etc)?
The armour and robots rules make sense too, the challenge is probably to ensure that there aren't too many specific rules to remember as one of the delights of the Fistful rules is they are easy to pick up and don't require constant surveillance of tables and charts.

Well, there's really two kinds of play I think people will use. The big battle stuff, in which case I would recommend each force is basically homogenous. Like all Space Marines, or all aliens. In which case there's really only a couple of rules that need to remember for your force.
The other style of play would be smaller, where everyone in your team/force/crew are different, in which you can use the record sheets for your force to help remember. Especially in more of a 2v2 or 4v4 setting, I don't think this is a problem.
The core is really the same. It's just the weapons and few tweaks that really make it different. And you're going to tailor it to your game. The previous play test was Fistful of Lead: Reloaded with automatic weapons. Totally stripped down.It played great.

If the guys I play with can figure out, I think anyone can.

Over the years I've found trying to change somebody's likes or dislikes about war-games rules is like trying to convert their religion. It's better to just let it go. Buy my stuff, or don't. I will say, no one's ever complained, at least to me, that my games weren't fun.

Speak for yourself!  lol

He can’t, that’s where Dr De’ath steps in.  :D

Game report sounds great. Reads as if it could play WW2 city fights etc as well.  8)

I have definitely used them for WW2 city fights. Works great for commando style raids. With the plethora of WW2 rules out there, I just haven't bothered putting them out there.

We have quite a game planned for this Thursday. Weird robots that like to yell "exterminate!" for some reason, Templars of both the Eternal Light and Infinite Void wielding powers that boggle the mind, plus GOONS!

It should interesting.
