Miniature scale for 1/64 cars?
« on: February 04, 2018, 09:52:26 PM »
Hi,

As mentioned in the title, which miniature size matches 1/64 cars or other vehicles like hotwheels and matchbox?

I would think 15 mm or maybe 20mm miniatures, but could someone confirm this and maybe post a comparison picture?

Greetings,

Zeebeest.

15mm is very approximately 1/100, 20mm is approximately 1/87 to 1/72 and 28mm is approximately 1/56...
So based on all that... older 'true' 25mm figures?
I know lots of people use hotwheels cars with 20mm figures for Mad Max type auto-combat. Which works fine until you try to introduce 20mm size vehicles which end up looking rather tiny in comparison!

1/64 is 27mm to top of head. So yes "old" 25mm like Dixon, Steve Barber, older Foundry....lots of stuff out there
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

Whack a base under ‘em and often as not they will work with 28mm. I have a mixture of diecast cars including some 1/64 items. To a certain degree it really depends on the car and how big you perceive it to be.

Yep. This. I have cars ranging from 1:64 to 1:43 which I use with 32mm (on average) minis and it really depends on the car and what "looks right" to you. A big part of that is if the figures have thick bases or not.

1:64 is commonly used as size rather than scale for Hotwheels, Matchbox. Majorette etc. Another name is 3 inch. Within those ranges scale varies enormously, 3 inch trucks will be about 1:100 while lawnmowers, motorbikes etc. will be bigger scaled. Guess the best way to check if a car fits your needs is to take a 25/28mm to the shop and compare it with the cars you'r interested in. And indeed, remember the base of the model. if you only use a base on your models and not your cars, 1:43 might be a better scale for you.

You might be helped with this little 'invention' of mine of years ago. It canbe of help when determining if a toy is suitably sized or not... ;)

Now that's useful....such an aid would have saved me from making many a useless impulse purchase which didn't fit when I got it home  :(

There are certain lines that are actually 1/64 scale, but they are more expensive and clearly marked.
But yes, generally those cars are "Box Scale", as in however big it should be to fit exactly in the box. So they vary wildly.

I find that 1/72 scale (20mm) figures fit with a lot of the cars, and I use them as drivers.
Most trucks look good with 15mm.  Snowmobiles, four wheelers, and motorcycles are sometimes good for 28mm.
When dealing with Hot Wheels or Matchbox, you really need to check each one individually if you're looking for matches.  If you're good with "close enough", then most will work just fine with 1/72 figures.
